Default Broken weld

This past Sunday I was on I-10 in Louisiana. It is one rough SOB. Well, my car has stock mufflers. The weld on the flange on the muffler pipe broke clean off. The muffler pipe dropped down from the X-pipe and we had to listen to a straight exhaust from underneath the car for the next 40 miles going home. I removed the driver side muffler last night (the broken one). While under the car I noticed that the passenger side flange to muffler pipe had already been rewelded. All of the weld is still on the pipe and not on the flange. It looks like a metal fatigue issue. Has anyone else had this problem? Or is it an isolated issue. I won't be riding on that stretch of I-10 again between Lake Charles and Vinton in the Vert.

It is quite common, my 2000 never broke, but when I replaced them you could see they were ready to seperate. Just have them re-welded like the other side.

Thanks, I am gonna reweld it this afternoon. I want to change out the mufflers. Give it a little more rumble. Don't want it too loud at hiway speeds. Just a good mellow tone. Any suggestions?

Happened to me with Corsa's. Only cost me $20 bucks to get fixed. The welder told me that the cause is the way the muffler and tips are set up there needs to be some other type of support for the weight. I didn't mind the drive with the straight pipe. Thought it sounded pretty good.

This is very common:
Mine were re-welded before i owned it. Too bad they welded over each of the bolts connecting the mufflers to the Hpipe. I finially realized I wasnt going to budge them when I upgraded to Corsas...I had to take it to the local shop and have them cut the bolts free from the welds.

Also, be careful about driving without the mufflers connected to the Hpipe...I have read on this forum where some guys drove without their mufflers and then realized the heat from the exhaust contributed to a broken rear leaf spring...

Here is a link from the past...Im post #7:
