I am having intermitting starting problems. Everything has check out except for the grounds. I am looking at G104 right next to the bottom of the battery.
Here are my questions:
- Three wires are attached, what do these control/connect to?
- Where all three wires come together, there is a bolt/stud with no nut on top. Should there be a nut on this stud? If so would this cause a bad ground?
Don't have access to my manuals tonight, but I know at least one wire ties into the negative battery post. There should be a nut on that stud securing the connection. Just to make sure, the plastic battery compartment divider rests on this ground post. There is small tab at the bottom that fits right over the post. The nut should be below (underneath) that plastic tab.
Each year C5 is a little bit different. My 98 only had 2 wires. My 02 has 3 wires. On the 2001 and up C5's it is labled as Chassis ground g-104/108. So,,yea,, there are more wires. YES!!!!!!!!!! there must be a NUT on the stud!!! If there isnt,,,you problem lies there!!!!!
Well I found out the bolt had a nut on it, it was just underneath the heat shield. I did notice a ground wire that was sticking out and touching a hose. I put the wire back within the heat shield. I haven't had problems recently, so hopefully it is fixed. But who knows. I am also going to get back under the car and check the ground where the negative batter cable goes to the block. All the started wires were clean and tight.
Bill, I am still having the intermitting starter issue. Less often than before, but still having it. I have checked the battery, TDR, clutch pedal sensor and ground g104 as well as the one on the block, I also checked the wires to the starter. All these looked fine. So I guess I am down to either the starter or the battery cables. I just don't feel like it would be the starter, because when it works it fires right up no dragging. Also it only happens when the car is hot and has been driven. It never happens on a cold start. How would I test the battery cables? When testing them do I have to be experiencing the problem when testing?
Thanks for your help, I know you are also helping stormrider. Hopefully we can figure out both of our problems. Thanks in advance.
If it were me,,,I would rip the starter out and rebuild it. You most likely have a defective solenoid. There is a contact washer inside it that can get very carboned up and cause this problem. You can try a new solenoid or starter and solenoid. Which ever you perfer.
