Don't know about the effort of installing the hardened shaft (fairly non-trivial, I'd bet), but installing the diff brace on the car really requires a lift. I know, I know, there are folks out there who've done it on jack stands, but it was hassle enough using the lift. Lowered the entire rear suspension (which you'll be doing anyway for the output shaft, I imagine) about 3 inches, made it much easier.
