Default Ping?

I'm not sure if I'm hearing a ping or not but when in 5th gear and kindof bogging the engine and then accelerating, I think I'm hearing a slight ping. The engine has a little bit of a rough idle. It's not overheating at all, it's running about 180 or so. No codes other than lost communication with... I assume those are from a battery disconnect or a loose connection at the ECM at one time. I'm curious if the EGR valves plug up on these engines. I installed new spark plugs (NGK Iridium's) last night because I had never even looked at them and I've had it for 20K miles. All the old plugs looked the same as far as wear goes. No oil consumption. 68K miles on the clock. I always run 91 octane fuel from Mobil or Chevron. Do these cars have a carbon build up problem? Any ideas of where to start looking?

If you can hear spark KNOCK on an LS1 or LS6 engine,,,,something is really wrong!!! We have a pretty aggressive spark retard program built into the PCM and it works well! Yes the LS engines can carbon up and will cause the engine to KNOCK when it normally shouldn't. If you want to de-carbon your LS engine, I recommend that you use a product called "SEA FOAM" AutoZone sells it around here in CT. You use the PCV connection to suck it out of the can. While a trusted friend is holding the RPM up around 1200, start sucking the sea foam out of the can. When your about half empty have the friend turn the Key to OFF. This will allow raw sea foam to sit in the cylinders. Allow the sea foam to sit overnight. The next morning, crank it up and watch the smoke show. NO MORE CARBON! Make sure that you change the oil and filter after wards.

LS engines do NOT have an EGR valve.

SEAFOAM.

I set off a cloud of smoke that will settle on London in three weeks.
But my car is clean and happy. Idles correctly now too.

Might want to check your gas too. I had a similar situation and started using only Tier 1 gas (Shell is the only one around me) and the problem has stopped.

I will definitely do this procedure. Bummer, I just changed the oil!

So, 7-11's gas is better than Mobil? I guess I'll stick with Chevron anyways.

How bad is spark knock? I hear it too in my A4. Only happens when the torque concerter locks up in 3rd or 4th while in low rpms. It goes away after rpms pick up.

I have an SD tune...would this be more prone to such knocking? I just decarbed about three months ago...I didn't think I would have to do it agian for a while. How often is this necessary?

I put Valero gas in mine once and got tons of knock... switched back to my usual Shell and haven't had a problem since!
