Try this first..

While crusing down the road, lift up on your brake pedal, then try the button and see if the system will engage.

The system will not function if it detects the secondary brake switch is closed. On my car, I started noticing an "intermittent" lack of operation, and suspecting the switch, if I lift up on the brake pedal it works every time.

There are a few creative ways to solve the switch issue if that is indeed your problem.

One way to fix it, is to adjust the stoplight switch which is located at the top of the brake pedal. I was able to just move mine in and out until I had the proper adjustment.
