Default C5 RIS and trans

Hi, I'm planning to do a converstion from a solid axle to a C5 RIS in a project vehicle of mine, but I need some information before I buy parts.

First off, what is the width from mounting surface to mounting surface at the most extended point? Is the Z06 RIS wider?

What are the main differences between the base RIS and the Z06 RIS?

Does the Z06 have a different axle tube then the base model(because of the M12 trans)?

Will the M12 trans bolt up to the base model RIS?

This is just the start, I'm sure I'll have more questions, so any other information is MUCH appreciated. Thanx.

There is no fundamental diiference between "stock" and Z06 RIS. Depending on year, you may find that the leaf spring in the Z06 RIS is stiffer, different shocks (same mounting points), and stiffer anti-sway bar. So no, there is no dimensional difference from mounting surface to mounting surface (I'm assuming you're meaning wheels mount location).

Z06 torque tube dimensions are the same as stock because the tranny case for the MN6 and MN12 are identical. Only tranny differences are internal - different gear ratios.

Doesn't the C5 RIS use coilovers, not leafs? If I'm wrong about that, PLEASE tell me there is a conversion, but I'm pretty sure that was a change between the C4 and C5.

Stock C5 and Z06 RIS use a leaf spring. Coil springs are an aftermarket conversion.

Thank you for that information, it's a good start. So, can anyone tell me what the width is from hub to hub?

How accurate a measurement ?? plus or minus 2 inches, 1 inch, 0.1 inches, 0.01 inches ??

For anything accurate you'll probably have to contact someone like LG Motorsports for that kind of information (assuming they have it, or will share it). Accurately measuring that dimension on the car is very difficult (jack the car and the RIS droops) and I've not seen it given in any of the DIMENSIONS data.

It doesn't have to be very accurate. I was just hoping someone could jack it up and pull the spring, then jack up each side of the IRS to get the full extension out of it and run a tape measure from hub to hub. I need to know because if it is wider then my project then I'm going to have to be prepared to make my own control arms. And that, just doesn't sound fun(or to safe). I just need to know within a couple of inches.

OK, I ran a steel tape measure through my Z06 rims (car is sitting on the ground) from side to side on the rear and measured from outside rim to outside rim (74 inches - as exactly as I could see). Then I measured the distance from the outside rim to the hub ... 3 1/2 inches by eyeball ... for a total of 7 inches for the 2 wheels.

So, give or take about a 1/2 inch, I'd say hub-to-hub is darn close to 67 inches.

Ah, ****, the current axle is 54. This could be a problem.

So, does anyone know of a good book to read about suspension dynamics?

Thanks for all of the info BlackZ, you've answered my biggest questions.

Since you and I seem to be having a private conversation here ...

I have a book called "Racing and Sports Car Chassis Design" published by (then) Robert Bentley, Inc. ( ISBN 0-8376-0296-3 ). It has a couple of chapters on suspension design issues. Appears that it is out of print, but maybe you can find it at a library or on the internet (amazon or ebay).

Bentley Publications ( see http://www.bentleypublishers.com/ ) has a couple of books that may be of use .. click on Engineering/Ref on the left side menu, or the Performance choice and see what they have.

Finally, try this search on Amazon and see if any of these fit your needs ...

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw...o.x=12&Go.y=14

This is a BOOK search for the word SUSPENSION ....
