Default High Stall Torque Converter

Guys I am about to swap out the stock torque converter with a 9.5” diameter converter, but I am very uncertain on the stall speed I should get due to the amount of miles I commute on a daily basis. When you go past the stock stall speed on the converter of 1800 rpm’s to lets say a 2500 or 3000 stall speed converter, will I get higher rpms for normal stop and go traffic driving verses having a lower stall speed. I know that defiantly I will get a heck of a lot more performance but the rpm’s in low gears like 1-3rd under normal driving worry me. My A4 usually shifts around 1600 -1800 rpms during normal acceleration. Any ones input that has increased their stall speed on their converter is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ralph

I put a 3500 Yank in my vert about a year ago. The newer hi-stalls are not as loosey goosey as the older ones. I do a lot of city driving and hardly notice it all. It will lock up at low throttle about 1300-1400rpm. The difference being it will unlock as moderate throttle and will stall at full throttle up to about 3300rpm. As long as you cruise in town it acts almost like the stocker.

I have a Viggy 2800 in my 200 coupe. Drives great around town, but when you stand in it you will notice the difference. Highly recommend! Also install a cooler at the same time.

if you're not planning on any more mods you should be happy with something in the 2500 - 3000 range. Wouldn't pay for you to go any higher and, yes, you will rev somewhat higher driving around town. IF you drive with care you'll be able to maintain gas mileage. Problem is once you feel the new "pop" you won't drive for mileage.

Unless you engage in stop light grand prix on a frequent basis or drag the car, the higher stall speed won't do that much for you. The only advantage of the higher stall speed is that you can lock the brakes, bring the engine rpm in to the fatter part of the torque band, release the brakes and have more hp and torque than you would with the stock converter. If you decide to go ahead with the higher stall converter, you need the cooler as well because the slippage will generate more heat in the fluid and absent the cooler you'll eventually have a transmission rebuild in your future.

High stall converters help acceleration all around, from a dig, on the parkway, etc.
I've run a 4000+ stall for the last 20k miles and don't have a cooler. If you turn your fan turn on temps down it'll work just as well.

I totally agree. It is the stall I run and it is great. It's very tight and drives much like the stocker until you stand on it. A great converter. Yank designed it for 3.15 gears.

YPT4400 here and I love it! I know it's not for everyone, but I wish I would have gone this big the first time. Big stalls aren't as bad as some on here make them out to be. If you have a good tuner it helps a lot.

SS3600 on my A4, 3.73 rear. No comparison in how much more fun it is to drive. I put about 10-12K/yr comuting a few years ago and it made the drive to work the best part of the day.

Sounds like my set up: yank ss3600, 3.73's, shift kit, trans cooler, tune = awesome no problem as a DD, I loved the car before now it feels like a sports car should.

how r ya face? long time no read. i been out for some time but im back now! yeah i wish i went straight to this stall converter. i went from a yank 3000 and 3:42's and that wasnt enough for me. then i went to 3:73's and the vig4000 2.25str. wish i didnt spend so much $ on the installs and went straight to this setup. reading here from the scaredy cats made me think twice on going to a high stall speed at first

Glad to see you're back! I remember when the SY3500 was considered a big verter.
I went from SY3500/3.15's to SY3500/3.73's, to SS4000/3.73, to YPT4400/4.10's, to YPT4400/3.90's. With my next motor I'd like to go bigger.
