Default Belt came off..Why?

Started the Vette this morning and I had no power steering. When I looked under the hood the sepentine belt was off. It didn't break it was just of the pulleys. My wife said it was fine when she parked it last night. I can't see any obvious for the belt to coming off. With my sons assistance I pushed on the tensioner while he sliped the belt back on the altenator pully. Took it for a test drive and had no problems.
Anybody have any idea what might have caused the belt to come off? If it came off once it'll probably do it again and probably not in my yard next time!

The MOST COMMON reason for a car to throw a serpentine belt is:

1- A bad belt

2- The harmonic balancer pulley is working its way off the crank! Happens all the time.

Check it out! If it has any kind of warranty, get it looked at.

Also, check your Belt Tensioner Pulley. If it gets weak and out of alignment, you'll throw belts.

I]ll buy a belt tomorrow. The belt tensioner does not look like it's exactly verticle. Looks like it leans in slightly at the top. Could this be the problem? Harmonic balancer pulley looks ok from what I can see. Unfortunately no warranty.

If the tensioner looks like it's tilting in, that's your problem. Get a new one and a belt from one of the Forum Vendors like Fred Bean or GM Parts Direct. It's a simple replacement job.

get with the later part number, you could use the 2001-2004 version, common fail item

My Balancer went bad but it may be hard to see if you don't know what you're looking for, like me. The balancer can separate just slighly enough to throw the belt but not look visually bad.

The wife did something wrong, that's all there is to it, like throw it into reverse while moving forward or something.

DO NOT LET HER DRIVE IT ANYMORE !!

Look carefully at the crank pulley. If it is wobbling even a little, that may be the problem. Other suggestions on idler pulleys, etc., are good as well. Belts don't just jump off, especially a ribbed serpentine.

visually watch the balancer and see if can detect a wobble while it is turning and listen for noise such as a sqecking if you have either you will have to change the balancer
