Default Another Ebcm Issue I Think

Thanks for the information BlackZO6. I was glad you responded to my

post. I only let the rear wheels spin at idle and now that I know more

about it, I never will go any faster.

Thanks again!

Actually the EBCM recalibrates the Steering Angle Sensor as explained in the Service Manual ...

Steer Angle centering is the process by which the EBCM calibrates the steering sensor output so that the output reads zero when the steering wheel is centered. Using the yaw rate sensor, lateral accelerometer input, and wheel speed sensor inputs, the initial steering center position is calculated after driving greater than 6 mph for more than 10 seconds in a straight line on a level surface.

DTC C1283 for example is set if the vehicle has been driven for more than 10 minutes without completing steering angle centering.

A C1287 sets if any one of the following three conditions occurs ...

1) The steering wheel position sensor is synchronized and the steer rate (speed that the steering wheel appears to be turning) is greater than 1100 degrees per second

2) The steer rate is less than 80 degrees/second and the difference in the phase angle between Phase A and Phase B is greater than 20 degrees (The steering wheel position sensor supplies 2 analog inputs, Phase A and B to the EBCM. The 2 input signals are approximately 90 degrees out of phase. By interpreting the relationship between the 2 inputs the EBCM can determine the position of the steering wheel and the direction of steering wheel rotation)

3) The two steering sensor signala (Phase A and B) do not agree for one second. Under this condition this DTC will set along with DTC C1281.

Usually a C1287 means the steering angle sensor is failing and needs to be replaced, but it could be a wiring issue, or a bad EBCM.

Post any other codes you're getting and I can give you the Service Manual descriptions for those too.
