Tried searching....
I need a good write up for pulling a motor out the top.
Once it's down to a shortblock I need to know how what to disconnect to lower the cradle enough remove the engine.....and what to aviod!!
Let me know what you did and how it worked out.
BTW I don't have a lift so goin out the bottom is not an option.
I have done one out the bottom with out lift by myself..no fun
About to do another one in the next 2 or 3 weeks going to go out the top this time.. Assume you have to remove intake maybe heads, we are thinking oil pan no cradle maybe...we will see.
I remember reading a thread where they unbolted the top A-arms and then unbolted the cradle and used a jack to lower it slightly to provide clearance......

This is similar to having teeth extracted through your @$$, only it hurts more. If someone has done this I would REALLY like to see the write up as well.
check out Jason's (CajunDude's) link above - Jason's step by step pics are AWSUM
WOW! What a post! GM only WISHES they put out tech manuals this straight forward and easy to understand. If anyone from the General reads this post, you need to put CanuDude in charge of training publications. ANYTHING would be an improvement over the Helm manual that has writers who go out of their way to use terminology that bears no resemblance to words that mechanics use and then put them in no logical order or relation to functional use.
Jason - send this to GM as an example of what can be done by someone who actually wrenches engines.
Out the top is pretty easy, I haven't been taking pics or righting about it though. If you pull the intake, coil packs, and such you can get it out by letting the craddle drop on the passanger side. Hardest part is getting it off the torque tube. Make sure you unplug all the wire's and remove all the grounds. When you start out with it go very slow so that you can triple check the you removed all the wires.
i did it, having a few friends helps
just like any other removal, ie. radiator, starter, mounts, etc....
the problem was the oil plan clearing to swing block forward
remedy: remove 4 bolts from front subframe, and force it down as far as possible (i pryed it down and left some blocks in place)
I've taken my motor in and out 4 times through the top, and once out the bottom... TOP is way easier trust me, unbolt the shock from the lower a arm and remove the top a arm from frame,.. and drop the suspension. 4 bolts on the cradle to the frame,.. Make sure engine hoist is at the side of the car not the front otherwise you will run the hoist into your front bumper support motor with chain then un bolt the cradle slowly and it will fall right out. Remember to unbolt the torque tube from the bellhousing then slide motor forward and turn 30 degrees. Hoist it up and out it comes fairly simple just alil manuevering,... Its not a big pain in the a$$ trust me, just takes patience.
