You don't need it. Your DIC gives you the exact same info. All you need is a code list and that's buried on the forum here somewhere as well as how to get to them.

I'm inclined to agree... if you have a C5. However most other 1996 and later vehicles, including the C6 don't have this capability, so I purchased one of these...
It is an INNOVA® 3110 CanOBD2™ Code Reader. It works on all of my other 1996 and later vehicles and is fairly inexpensive.
I have noticed that not all of the codes that I can read on my C5's DIC will be picked up by the scanner however. It will pick up all of the major ones including any that will set the CEL, and allow you to clear them as well. However some of the more obscure ones will not show.
Checked the front page of the forum. Yep, this is the C5 forum alright. Just a stab in the dark, but could the original poster let us know if his toy is a C5?
I have Autotap, but it does a lot more than just scan for codes. Are you looking for something GM specific or are you looking for a makes (general use)?

You can't read codes through the DIC on a C6? Wow, a step backwards for GM.
I have a 2000 vette and am having problems with my car also. I am getting a 1288 steering wheel sensor code along with service active handling and service enginge soon. I have read many post and I think that it may be my ebcm I rebuilt the car it was totaled Had the engine out. checked the grounds did all the things I do have a service manual and I have looked at that alot. The manual says use a Tech II is there any other scan tools that a person can buy for less. A tech II Is about $2,500.00 Seems like at about 55mph the car will almost act as if the transmission is slipping. The car is an automatic.
Thanks for whatever help you folks can give

There are two types of scanners. The cheap ones are your OBD 2 generic ones. The DIC will show most of these code, the cheap hand helds will also show all the generic codes.
Next step is one that will do the generic and GM enhanced codes (up to 124 on a Corvette. These include many of you cheap computer software programs.
Third tier is bi-directional scanners such as EASE, EFILive, HPTuners and Tech 2. They not only scan all the codes but also let you do features like crankshaft sensor alignment, etc.
The EASE software and the Tech 2 handheld are OEM approved and have the ability to scan every sensor in the car from ABS modules to power windows. The Tech 2 is a handheld with all the modules included and the EASE is a software backage with module to be added. The base setup would be the Enhanced GM system and modules would include the ABS, BCM, etc, including a logging attachment. These two will also let you reflach OEM GM software.
EFILive and HPTuners also have Programming and logging attachements available.
