Because in the steps following, you'll disconnect the MAF and disconnecting the battery is just a safety precaution when pluggin'/unpluggin' electronics.

To be 100% safe disconnect it. I didn't and everything was fine. Risk management told me that I would be OK at 99.98% safe.

All stupid service procedure start with this.. Hell I barely disconnect the battery if I am replacing a PCM...
The only time not doing it ever bit me was when working on the Starter.....

My wifes old Infiniti J30 had the dipstick right next to the positive battery terminal. Let's just say I found that out the hard way.
Damn near gave me a heart attack.

To put the PCM in re-learn mode. Take your car out for a 50-100 mile drive so it can 'learn' to use the extra air flow.
