Default Timing Cover Seal Question

Well I have finished the head, cam, header install. All is well so far. My question is: After I had finished all of the R and R I decided to read the shop manual, they say real mechanics don't read the manuals, oh well. In the section for replacing the front crank pulley seal, it says something like "Important: Do Not lubricate the sealing surface of the crank pulley seal". Well being old school and not having used a teflon seal prior to this one, I by habit oiled the seal prior to installing it. Has anyone else done this and what is going to happen since I oiled the seal??? Is it going to pick up dirt and leak? Is it going to delaminate? Any experiences or even theories with this are appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan

I caught myself before I put seal grease on mine, which would have been my "default response".

I assume you already installed the cover / balancer. You could try to remove the balancer, carefully clean the inside lip with brake cleaner, or some other degreaser that might be less harsh to the rubber.

I might even go so far as to recommend buying another seal if you aren't pressed for time and can find one local.

Bottom line, you do not want this seal to leak; it will be a huge PITA to deal with once it's all back together. The manual also specifies the balancer surface should be clean and dry as well.

The other important step is to center the cover on the balancer (install cover with bolts loose, then balancer, then carefully tighten cover).
