I went to start my wife's 98 coupe, no click from starter or any noticable result from turning key to start position except for a brief dimming of dash and under hood light. Battery appeared to be okay, but I charged it anyway. Head lights appeared to be strong also. I then turn they key off and to start position serveral times. Got a message to remove key for ten seconds and start. No result from following that direction. I then tried the other key. No result. I then cleaned the resistors on both keys. No result on first attempt to start but after turning key off and to the start position a couple of times, it started. It started 10-12 times after that with no problem. Ran a load test on battery just for grins, passed okay. Still starts and runs fine. Any body have any thoughts as to what might have been the problem, other than the key resisters? Thanks in advance. Harold
When you get the "Pull Key - Wait 10 Sec." it sometimes means the column lock may malfunction. It will also do this if the battery is bad, but you already took care of that. May be worth the $60.00 to have a column lock bypass kit on hand just in case.
I am having the same issue with many others. Here are some thinks to check.
- If 6 -speed check clutch pedal relay(the push in button behind clutch pedal - when key is turned to start you can push clutch in and out and should hear clicking at TDR relay)
- ignition switch
- TDR relay in passenger floorboard panel (when key is turned to start power should be coming out of the purple wire that goes directly to starter solenoid) you should also be able to hear it click when you turn key
- Battery connections and cables
- Ground on block by starter and ground by battery
- And last but not least the starter.
I have narrowed mine down to the starter and battery cables. Mine is intermitting and I have trouble getting it to not start(at least when I have time to test it ).
instead of with many others, I meant to say many others are having same issue. You can do a search and you will find many good diagrams and suggestions.
I have cleaned the cable to battery connections. I will check cables to starter.
I will listen for the relay click if the problem returns and check power out of relay as well as power to relay coil if that is possible. No power to the relay coil could indicate ignition switch I suppose.
Trans is automatic, I did move the gear shift to different positions to try to check the saftey switch, I assume that it has a saftey switch in the shifter linkage, I guess that is something I need to verify if it happens again.
A dealer has done the column lock recall, will that eliminate that as a source of the problem?
I will clean said grounds.
If all else fails I will remove and check starter. Thanks for the suggestions. Harold
