No, you don't have to take the battery out of the car to use the battery tender. I use one and all I do is just pop the hood and hook the tender up.

Been using one for years now. I run the power cord down past the header to the ground and plug it in. I then leave the hood down but not latched. The first thing I look for when I get in the car is if the hood is down. If not, I know to go take the tender out before starting up. Last thing you need is to take off with the thing plugged in.

I have heard horror stories about trickle chargers shorting out and causing fires. I think the Battery tender is a pretty high quality piece and I don't worry as much as I would with a cheap one.

Battery tender here. Hook it up like everyone else, but I also plug mine into a good quality surge protector before it goes to the wall plate. Lots of lightning in FL and I don't want to find a fried PCM or anything else.

Hmmmm… That’s a good idea! Although a lightening strike would never make it through the transformer/rectifier in the tender it would indeed toast it! Great, now I have to go and get a spike stick….
