My 02 Z went in to GM(bad mistake) for the dreaded column lock issue. There were no problems or codes with the car prior to having GM do the recall. The only reason it went in for the recall was that in order for me to import the car to Canada, I had to have a recall letter from the dealership in the States stating that there were no outstanding recalls on the vehicle.
After under 1 mile of driving the car the "Pull Key Wait 10 Sec" appeared. What a joke! Countless threads later on the issue(thank you all) I figured out that there had been no tampering with the BCM wiring on the passenger side. The only alteration performed during the recall was a relay that was hooked up to the column lock(driver's side).
I have removed the relay and taken some pics of it for others to identify if need be. My CLB from Corvettes of Houston is a day or two away and I can't wait to finally put this most frustrating issue behind me.
Once again, thank you to all of the members who have shared all of this valuable info.
I hope this info may be valuable to someone in the future, just as the other info posted here has been of great help to me.
This assembly is GM's version of exactly what you'll recv. when you get your aftermarket part.
The only difference is the GM item (apparently) uses a marginal quality relay.
I have heard that the GM relay is designed to operate at optimum voltage(12.2 +). If the voltage on the car dips for whatever reason(low battery, foot on brake when starting etc.) the relay does not function as it should and throws an error code.
Do it right the first time or don't do it at all.
Looks like one of the infamous "white" relays that are prone to premature failure. I got one of the kits with the original black relays, and have not had any problems.
Did the dealer also go ahead and remove the lockplate for you as part of the recall?
I like having the lockplate removed so at least the column cannot physically lock. Then all you have to deal with is the electrical part of the system.
The numbers off my relay are:
TYCO
VPRD-35F14-Z03
031851A
15410751

They never removed my lockplate at the time but I hear they are doing that now if you have the recall done.
I re-connected the factory wiring after I removed the "white relay", turned the key and everything is back to normal. No "service column lock". Now I can put the proper CLB in and I am going to send the PCM to Chuck at Westchester Corvette's. He is going to flash the PCM to delete the fuel shut-off and give it a good street tune.
You won't be disappointed. Chuck disabled my fuel cut-off and it was the best thing I've ever done to my car!!! Runs better too.
I read your post about Chuck and that is what inspired me to contact him. It is always nice to hear good positive feedback about someone that is devoted to these cars. Thanks thorn92 for posting about Chuck. I will be removing my PCM this weekend and sending to Chuck first thing Monday morning.
Thanks for the info MYZED06_EH.
I have the GM kit with those same numbers sitting on my desk.
This kit was given to me free by a forum member and they aren't cheap, around $80.
On the other hand they are cheap, as in dependability.
I was wondering since I already have a kit if I could go somewhere like Radio Shack and buy a good quality relay and replace it?
Thanks
