Default Header Install...Time Required????

I called a local speed shop here in Phoeinx the other day and they said that they would bill 7 hours, at $95 per, for the header install.

I have looked at the how to's on this subject and I would think that I could do it myself, if I had what I needed here, in that amount of time.

Does this seem excessive or about average?

I would say 5-10 hours. I did it with some volunteers. Ok let me correct myself they did the work. It took us about 10 or 11 hours but we had never done it before and we had some problems and we spent about 2 hours waiting to splice 02 sensors. If we had the extenders it would have been around 9 or 10. I've been told 6-8 hours by a couple local shops

what brand headers are you putting in? some are more of a PITA then others.i put mine in[lg pros] in 3 hours start to finish.granted i spin a wrench for a living and that was with using a lift.
$700. labor is steep.even the more PITA install are like 5 hours.JMO

if you were quoted that for lg's,they have never put a set on.the only way it would take that long for lg's is if you fell asleep.

The 1st time I did it - 5 hours.
The 2nd time I did it - 3 hours.
The 3rd time I did it - 2.5 hours.
The 4th time I did it - 2 hours.

Hardest part is the drivers side. The new (made by Borla) LG Headers are much easier to install than their 1st generation headers.

Love my LG headers; I'm on my 2nd set.

I forgot to mention... a friend brought me a t-shirt that read "Trust me. I do this all the time." when he heard I was doing the exhaust the 4th time.

Since you may know, I have a box w/ GHL longtubes, cats, and X pipe that have been in my foyer for 2 months. I found access to a lift, but it's a friend of a friend type thing and don't want to leave it there longer than necessary. I will probably have 2 helpers, neither have done exhaust work, but all are decently mechanically inclined. How are the GHL's time / PITA factors?

I was thinking more like 4 to 5 hours max if it is done by a pro. Seven hours just seems like a rediculous amount of time to me, especially when the labor cost is $95 per hour.

According to the sales rep they install the LG headers on a regular basis, the shop is also listed on the dealers page of the LG website.

Can anyone recommend a quality shop that does work for a fair price in the Phoenix area? I do know that quality work isn't cheap, nor should it be, but I'm not in the business of giving money away.

I think I called that same shop for the same thing. I even started a thread to ask about the insane, I mean "Extreme" price of $600+ for a LG header install. If you are in Phoenix....Im gonna buy a set myself. Maybe we can get together and do em both. I used to wrench, but dont have a lift.
Anyone in Phoenix have access to a lift?

So you know my dilema GPRacer. I think that working together on the install is a great idea, I would be glad to do something like that. Hell, I would even buy the beer if you supply the tools.

never did ghl's.from what i understand, they are like doing kooks[PITA],but don't hold me to it.if it's like doing the kooks, you are going to have to unbolt the motor mounts and lift the motor up.

I'm moving to Tucson end of January. If you guys don't get this taken care of by then, I'm game to drive up and help you out. This can easily be done with 4 jack stands and a set of gear wrenches. A lift is certainly not required.

I have all the tools that should be needed, plus tig welder just in case. I just need to order the headers. All I would need are some BIG jackstands. I just cant see it taking longer than 4 hours.
Most people on the forum that I asked said it cost them between$350- 500 to get them installed. I dont know why it is over $600 in Phoenix at shop "X" .

Colorado is the same way. I called one place that quoted 1200 for a header install.

That seems extremely high for just labor. Are they possibly including a tune so you will pass a sniffer test?

If you need a welder, you did something wrong!

Thanks torchred!

I am a patient man, I would have no problem waiting until the end of January, if GPRacer is cool with that we could all get together and knock this out. I live in SC so I don't have any tools or stands here just a good accent. I would be happy to make a donation for anything that might be needed.

I had called them back just to clarify with or without tune. They said NO tune header install = $600+. With tune $1100. Now for a shop that does that all day long that is total .
You figure they can probably do it in 3 hours, so they are just padding their pockets with your cash.
Sigh, so sad.

I have the tools and a single set of jack stands. The only thing I couldn't bring is the 2nd set to raise the front. Of course, I'm assuming you guys have a garage. My first day in Tucson will probably be the 29th of January. I can potentially come to Phoenix that weekend. I'm sure the fiance wouldn't mind the trip, she loves Phoenix.
