66impalalt1, The T56's that we have now have to be different as well as improved. You seem to know alot about this kind of thing... how do our transmissions differ from those of 9 years ago?
Mostly the input shaft, front adapter plate, extension housing, output shaft and triple cone synchro on 1-2. 93 F-body T56's did not have a provision for CAGS.

Are the input shafts or outputshafts different? shotpeened? Hardened? interior bearings different?
input and output shafts are probably different in length, its doubtful that the bearings are different but thats really not a problem.

Why is the M6 a Tremec and the M12 a Borg Warner?
Tremec bought Borg Warner or at least the part of borg warner that makes the t56-style transmissions.

One thing I dont hear about much even with the High HP applications of the C5 is the trannys breaking
I dont hear too much about T56's of any variety breaking very much. In f-body applications they have problems with twisting the output shaft, I suspect that in C5's thats not a problem since it is mounted in the rear and the car is lighter so it doesnt put as much stress on it during a launch.

I have a hard time thinking that a 93 transmission would fit our cars without major retrofit as well as holding up to a high HP application.
As I said, the guts of it would have to be transferred into the C5 T56. Meaning the 1-4 gears and 1-4 countershaft at the least. The 5-6 drive and driven gears can be installed on the C5's countershaft extension and output shaft.

There would be no way I would replace my transmission with a 9 year old T56. If I purchased anything for my car drivetrain wise it would be brand new.
Thats fine for you, some of us wouldnt worry about it. In fact I am more comfortable with the early (91-97) Borg Warner made T56's, it seems people have had less problems with these than the later ones made after Tremec took over production.

So yes, I do know a thing or to, and just so there is not any confusion. The t56 has been installed in:
91-current Viper
93-97 LT1 F-Body
98-current LS1 F-body
97-current Corvette (M12 is just a variation of the regular T56)

The case differs in each one of these applications, but in general the internals are interchangable.

Thanks for the info! Glad I got an A4! throw on a stall and gear and voila! Z06 acceleration.

I always felt that setting up gears was a tricky thing requiring a pretty skilled mechanic. Bolting in a tranny is a pretty simple thing.
I've had so many whiny rearends that the last thing I volenteer to do is have a stranger put a wrench inside mine.

Thanks for your reply. I really do appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me.

Would you really install a 91 to 97 T56 in a Brand new C5 and feel good about it?

I don't really want Z06 acceleration, I just want the gear ratios that came in the M12. The fastest C5 I have seen on here is a FRC (SW) and he is running 373's with his setup. I know some people are impressed by the way the Z06 accelerates, I guess I am more impressed at how a Viper accererates. This is the only reason I am building the motor up now. 40 hp just doesn't do it for me when I can have twice as much and when that goes then I will break it open and throw that 422,432, or maybe if it is realiable that 454 somebody was just talking about. But back on the subject, I think the test showed that the Z06 was limited to 167 mph because of the M12, I think the 97 coupe topspeed was 178 mph. Maybe this is the reason all C5R's are in Coupe configuration (well at least Andy Pilgrim's is). It seems with all the Torque these big bores are building one almost doesn't need lower gears, tranny or differential. But all of this has definetly been interesting to read.

Ok;

I've got an '02 with 3.73's & M6. Everyone should do the 3.73's. Didn't like the car without them. How much acceleration increase would anyone see with an M12 over the M6. Am going to do heads/cam but was thinking new gearing first if the acceleration increase from the M12 over the M6 would feel like ~25rwhp increase.

I was just looking at the 454 LS1, I don't think you would need lower gears with this beast. But anyway, you got 25 rwhp with your 3:73 mod? Well lets put it this way, I don't think the Z06 is getting that much extra horsepower from the M12.

I think the point of the M12 with 3.42's is you get the benifits of 3.73 in first and second. 5-6 are lower than the m6 also with the benifit of better mpg than 3.73. For quarter mile the m6 and 3.73 have the advantage of closer gear spaceing.1-4 gear. Ric

Good point Power Shifter, I think that the Z06 lost a little MPG's but really dude... I didn't buy a Vette for MPG's but it was nice when I took a long drive and could look down and still have a 1/2 tank..I guess there are naturally pros and cons to both. I do like the Z06's gear ratios (M12) setup though.......its all so confusing maybe I will just sell my car. :smash:   :nopity

I have had my M12 & 3.73 setup for aprox 6 months and love this combo. First and second gear acceleration is addictive!!

An added bonus is that now the car really makes the best use of all 6 gears. I recently came back from a trip and on the highway doing 78-80 MPH, I was turning aprox 1900-2000 RPM and getting around 30MPG!! Also, when I want to pass someone, there is no need to downshift to another gear. 6th gear is actually usefull!!

Hope this helps...

That is very impresive mpg. I was able to get that with my 00 coupe but with the Z06 it gets 26-27 at best. Have you seen an improvement in et's with your setup? I was concerned it would be even harder to get it to hookup. Ric

One point I haven't seen here is that if you get 3:73's you can sell your 3:42's to guys with automatics. Your old tranny isn't worth much to anyone. The economics look much better when considering the ability to sell your old rear end.

There is no doubt that the best bang for the $ is the differential. My 3:42's are long gone to a guy in Colorado and it is true that I have my "old" M6 transmission, but I figure in a few years when more and more C5's are out of warranty, someone will be needing one. Besides, it really doesn't take up THAT much room in the garage!

As far as traction in 1st gear, when I had the runflats, this was a MAJOR problem. Since then I have put on Nitto 555's and they have a lot more grip than the G/Y's.
