I explored the possibility of replacing my M6 with the M12 and compared them to the cost of replacing my 3:42's w/3:73's. The cost of an M12 from the dealership I went to was about $3300.00. The cost of 3:73's is 1600.00. Unless a different price can be found at a different dealership, then the 3:73's are a better bang for the buck. Not to mention that the new fastest LS-1 and SW's cars are not using the M12, and they are getting down the track pretty damn fast for having to shift gears. SW maybe you ought to throw an A4 in that beast with a Yank converter and see what that baby will do. I know a tuner here in California that has an ARE 422 w/250 shot of N02, A4 Yank Converter, in his T/A who thinks he will get into the 8's......we will see. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:
but with 3.73, will you have to get your speedo fixed so it reads the right #'s??? If so I'm sure that is done via the computer and now you just have to add another $400 or so for that....
I dont beleive its even necessary on the A4's. Since the gear that the reluctor reads off of, is not a different size. What the A4's will have to have modifed is something to do with shift points or something.
That sure is a better price than the one I got quoted, they must of quoted me the retail price/list price. From what I understand the LS6 tranny might be the way to go because of the 1st and 2nd gear ratios, Vetterdstr brought this to my attention sometime ago. I was going to install some 3:73's back before they could be group purchased at $1600.00. But for $800 more I am considering a whole new tranny. I have already had some parts replaced under warranty (42K miles on car) so I will have to weigh it out.
I had thought about the same thing (just changing the 1 & 2 gears), but this is what I suspected. I think I will buy the M12 when I get tired of my ARE Heads & Cam and need to upgrade to an ARE 422. Who knows, by then the M12 might be even lower. I can remember when the LS6 intakes were a few hundred dollars higher then they are now, maybe the tranny will follow suit. :jester
Has anyone tried looking into the 93 Fbody 6 speed tranny that was sold with the 2.73 gear option? It supposedly was very aggressive gearing similar to the M12 tranny.
Ther is only one transmission that will hold up to the power of the Corvette/Viper.. and that it the ones we have now... THe 93 trans IMO would burn up in no time. :(

I seriously doubt that. The 93 f-body transmission is a T56, similar to ours. It wouldnt be a simple swap, the guts from it would have to be swapped into a C5 T56 because of the rear mounting.

So how different are the trannys? It's not just a bellhousing or something simple like that? That's why I asked if anyone has looked into this as an option.
66impalalt1, The T56's that we have now have to be different as well as improved. You seem to know alot about this kind of thing... how do our transmissions differ from those of 9 years ago? Are the input shafts or outputshafts different? shotpeened? Hardened? interior bearings different? Why is the M6 a Tremec and the M12 a Borg Warner? One thing I dont hear about much even with the High HP applications of the C5 is the trannys breaking.. I have a hard time thinking that a 93 transmission would fit our cars without major retrofit as well as holding up to a high HP application.
There would be no way I would replace my transmission with a 9 year old T56. If I purchased anything for my car drivetrain wise it would be brand new.
