Default AFR/G5X3 Mod

Well its been quite a while. Bought the stuff back in Sept from LG. Had to send heads back to AFR because of the valve recall. But my buddies and I finally got her all buttoned up a week ago last Saturday.

Mods:
- AFR205 heads
- LG G5X3 cam
- Underdrive pulley
- LG mail order tune
- all the other little odds and ends that go with this mod
- HPTuners - cause I didn't think that anybody could get this mod perfect via mail order.

Fired her up at 5pm on Sat. Was on the road at 6pm. Even with the AH "on", at 2k rpm's on up, thru 3rd gear, she would NOT STAY STRAIGHT. Needless to say, WOW! The thing is a freakin' rocket.

Then came a week of playing with HPTuners...................

Had a couple of problems with warm start and surging at low rpm's. So I did some monitoring and called Shawn at LG. He was VERY HELPFUL and suggested a few things to look at and change. Which I did. Also did some other tweaks on my own as I gathered familiarity with HPTuners and tuning in general.

After spending most of last weekend honing her in, there is now very little surging and the warm start issue seems to be solved. While I don't have everything zero'd in perfect, I have to admit that this mod is extremely streetable, just like Lou says. She runs very nice in 6th gear at 50mph.

Next steps are some additional tweaking. ANd then off to the neighborhood dyno (who has a wideband) so we can see what she'll do at the rear wheels.

Oh, btw, I have ordered the Corsa Touring exhaust, cause the Indy's are just too freakin' loud now.

Thanks, Lou. Worth every penny.

^ Awesome... I've got a G5-X2 114 cam on the way, but keeping my stock heads for now.

Wondering if I'll be wanting to trade in my stingers after all this

Nice combination. Everyone that runs the G5X3 seems pleased with the performance. I just wish Lou would give out the duration numbers. I have a VetteDoctors custom grind and it really bugs me not knowing the specs.

Should be interesting to see you're dyno runs. Good luck and enjoy.

I've looked around a bit and found the general specs of the cam. Its also measureable if you want to go to the trouble. Suffice it to say, its a big stick.

Before the mod, I did a dyno. With no tune, just headers and blackwing, I dyno'd just over 300rwhp. With this mod, I'm expecting something north of 450 and similar torque. Will post up in a couple of weeks.

you have pretty much the same setup as I do. My guess is that your numbers would be close to mine. I guess we will see.....

Did you change your fuel injectors and which springs did you use??

BTW - is it a A4 or a MN6?

MN6

Did not change injectors. Also, the heads came all set up. I believe that I have seen the heads come with 918. Not sure. i might be wrong here. I do know that the valves were installed by AFR (they recalled my heads), so they probably did the springs too.

So what numbers are you putting out? Anything close to those posted on the LG web site?

Frankly I was pretty surprised with the pre-mod 303rwhp. But I know we kinda screwed that up, by only running to 5200 rpm.

on the Land Rocket! Please Drive Safely!

If you go onto LS1Tech, and put the cam in the search, the specs are there, but I'm pretty sure it's 234/242 duration and .602/.610 for the lift. Definitely a good sized cam!

Congratulations on your choice of mods. Love my G5X3 Have it for a full race season. Automatic car, 3.73 rear with a SS3600 stall, stock LS1 heads pushing 400 at the wheels. Runs the 1/4 in 11.62 at 119+ mph. I need to save the money up for a good set of heads.

I want to do the same thing, so how many pennies did you have to spend for the set-up?

Looking foward to seeing the numbers.

When you sent your heads back to AFR, did they say if you had any valves that had to be replaced?

I went into it thinking about $3k. I shoulda budgetted $4k. When all was said and done it was more like $4500. HPTuners was the little surprise, but once I started looking at the subject of tuning, I just had to have it. It's one heck of a toy. And so is the car.

Looking foward to seeing the numbers.

I didn't ask and they didn't offer. I was told that they did not have many bad valves. I will say that they were super with customer service, even tho I bought the heads from LG.

AFR made the recall about 4 days before my mod party. SInce it was all planned, we went ahead and ripped her apart and installed the cam, so she'd be ready for the heads when they came back.
Well this is Chicago and my wife isn't nuts about losing her garage in lousy weather. So I needed heads back quick cause the operating room (er, garage) was unusable while the car sat there all ripped apart. They got the heads back to me in about 10 days which was pretty quick since Tgiving was within that span.

I should add.................. Add another $1k for Corsa Touring exhaust, cause the Indy's are just TOO FREAKIN' LOUD now. Delivered tomorrow and installed tomorrow night. Will put the Indy's up for sale on forum right after install.
