Default Advice on VaraRam intakes

Guys, I am thinking about buying a VaraRam intake. What are the pros and cons of this system? I am concerned about water getting into the engine if I get caught in bad weather. All advice would be appreciated. Thanks.......

The vararam is the best intake as far as performance goes. The bad side is that it is of low quality. The fit and finish is pretty bad.

As long as you dont drive through puddles higher than the intake ducts then you should be ok.

I got a really good deal from vararam and they are here in Texas down by Houston. they get lots of rain. Mostly i was disapointed in the way the product looks and fits together. For the C5 anyway. the C6 version is different and may be a better design. it's one intake instead of 2.

I didn't find any problems with the fit on mine.. I followed CajunDude's post on installation and left some of the spacers out...
I bought it because users posted real track data to support their perfromance claims.... I have not seen that substantiation for others.
I've driven over 15K miles and through a lot of rain with no issues.
Of reported hydralock cases here on the forum a poll showed that other cold air intakes systems had just as many issues as the Vararam.

Wonderful intake, plenty more power. Light rain should not be a problem. Any rain that gets inhaled is blown through the engine. Lots of water if ingested can cause engine damage. (Lot's of water meaning submarining through deep puddles left after a storm.) If it's a fair weather car don't hesitate if it's a daily driver and it rains a lot where you are i might be concerned.

I VARARAM VB2 and couldn't be happier! My 02 ZO6 is a daily driver here in CT and believe me,,I have driven it in Lots of heavy rain storms! Like it was previously stated, unless you submerge the front of the car, your not likely to have HYDRO LOCK issues. I drove through a rain storm in VA soo bad that most of the other cars were pulling over!

Have never had any issues. If you want cold air and all the power from a good induction system, get the VARARAM from CajunDude. He is a forum sponsor!!! You wont be sorry!!

NJ, we getthe same weather, no problems at all. Ran the car in August at Pocono in the rain, ran fine. I also thought the fit and finish were fine, the filter was good quality and fit without and problems also. I did the install as per CanjunDude, did it myself in about 3-3.5 hrs.

completely. I live in Oregon and it POURED for most of November. I must admit driving on the freeway next to semi-trucks that were spraying lots of water freaked me out a little but, I never had a problem. As stated above... just don't submarine it into a DEEP puddle. CajunDude's instructions helped me a lot.

Fit was fine, I did run silcon sealant at the seams to achieve 100% ram forced air. I have the first gen VR-1B with the race filter. New ones come with a high flow conventional filter and is greatly improved. Excellant system, you only experience to gain at higher speeds, but it is there alright.

Ok, I am sold on the Vararam system. I talked with the manufacturer, LAPD, and my own smog guy and these are NOT legal in California. BUT since they look stock, most smog shops won't question it. I think I will start another post and ask if there are any California guys who had problems getting their VaraRam cars smoged. Thanks for the advice guys, your awesome!!!!

For $400+ it better fit like a glove and be designed to fit on easily. From pictures ive seen on installs and final fit its wasnt designed real good, but what is nowdays....

my vararam works great, im not too far from you (fresno-clovis) and haven't had any problems. you'd have to be going pretty fast to force rain up through the inlets, then through the filter, then continue up past the filter and then through the engine, into one or more cylinders with enough volume to lock the engine. if you drive fast enough, in bad enough weather to do that kind of damage....you'll be luchy if that's your only problem

I have to admit, last summer on the way back from CARLISLE PA on the way home to CT, it rained so freaking hard that the roads has 1-3" of standing water on flat straight sections!!!!! In some places there were 4,5 and 6" Luckily, I was in the C6 and could keep on trucking! The air filter/s in the C6 got wet and the car started to run crappy. Once the paper filters dried out, it was fine. I guess the GM engineers got that dynamic test correct!

IF,,,,,I would have been driving the C5 ZO6 with a VARARAM,,,,,I would have been spending some time in a rest area or in a hotel. I know my cars limitations!!!

Well guys, I wanted to update everyone and let you know that I bought the VaraRam. I am going to wait a couple of months when my next smog check is done before I install it so I won't have to worry about it for a couple more years. Thanks to all for your input.
