I just had my HUD windshield replaced and the only thing they did right was use OEM glass. :mad
The glass is scratched, they cut a piece of the A-pillar interior (so you can see the tan colored foam), the rubber molding along the top of the windshield is not flush, and the A-pillar interior trim piece curves in and out as it goes up the windshield. You would think at $2200 per windshield that they would only want to do it once.
What all needs to be replaced for a typical C5 windshield replacement (glass, moldings, rubber, etc.)? I want to be prepared for Round 2. They will be putting in another windshield next week.
I feel your pain! Why are these cars so diffcult to repair? It seems like everything I have done to my car, the dealer(s) do more damage than they fix. Plus the fixes NEVER ever work the first time ther're done. My Vette is sitting at a dealership AGAIN this weekend to try and fix the leaking rear end AGAIN.
By the way, if you want your Vette really RUINED, take it to:
WEST CHEVROLET
in Maryville Tn. These jokers can't fix your car, but they sure can damage it. They've damaged two Vettes for me!
I just had my truck windshield replaced and while the guy was working he kept looking at my vette parked nearby. I finally asked him how much and how hard to replace a hud/vette windshield. He said that he has only done six or seven but quoted a price around $3k and said that the windshield kit comes with the rubber seal but says it is seldom needed. He mentioned the hard part was getting the old windshield out because they are really glued in big-time. He said that it's a two-man operation where one guy sits in the seat with his feet up pushing on the windshield from the inside while the other guy cuts the glue seal on the outside. The problem is the windshield most often breaks while it is coming out and little shards of glass bounce across the hood. Make sure they cover the hood before they start.
The other thing to check before the installers leave is to make sure you turn on the HUD and all looks okay. I've heard that some of the HUD glass is not optically perfect and one gets a somewhat distorted HUD image.
Thanks for the install tips. I'm almost positive that there was only one installer who botched this job. He must have cut the A-pillar when he was cutting the glue.
The windshield molding/weatherstrip is one piece and is urethane glued from the factory. You cant remove it without trashing it.Make sure they replace it...
I'll make sure they order and use a new molding kit. I also have a newsletter from one of the autoglass news publications with the C5 windshield replacement procedure. This time I'm not taking any chances. :nono:
