Default Exhaust...

Ok I want to do the exhaust (from right behind the h-pipe back for now) and I have no idea what to get?? Would flowmaster 40 series be ok? What mufflers should I put back there?

Weeellll.

I have a Corsa Indy setup with SLP long tube headers. A lot depends on how much noise you want to make, can stand and where you intend to ultimately take the car (engine mods, etc).

I had F40's on my '89 coupe and the rumble was great but the resonance was a real pain. You had to scream at the passenger to be heard if you were in the right (or wrong) gear / rpm range.

I would advise Corsa, B&B, SLP (really loud), Borla Stingers, something along that line. There are many forum members who have recordings of their exhaust and can give you an idea of the noise dB, resonance and driveability issues.

Good luck and drive it like you stole it

It all depends on your tastes. The F40's will work like the others but each has a different sound and so forth. For me the resonance was just too much.

Your car, your ears and your decision.

Good luck,

C5 & ESPECIALLY C6 Corvettes can experience interior cabin resonance (DRONE) if the muffler is changed. There are systems that have little or no drone and some with a LOT! If you ask 100 C5 owners which exhaust system is best,,,,you will most likely get 150 different answers. This topic has been beat to death!

Even listening to the different exhaust clips wont give you the true sound. Your VERY BEST bet for getting an exhaust system that you are going to enjoy is to find a local C5 owner who has an aftermarket system and take a ride in his car! Just remember this!!!! Engine mods like headers, cams and even different heads will effect how an exhaust will sound. If his car is heavily modified, and you install the same exhaust system in your car, it will NOT be as loud or deep as his and you may not be happy with your selection. It goes the other way also. If your car is heavily modified and his isn't, the exhaust will be louder on your car.

There have been C5 and C6 owners who purchased a system cause of a recommendation from someone and it was not what they wanted and had to sell it. There are a few here on the forum who have velcro on there H pipe and change them weekly!!!

As for Horse Power increases from changing your mufflers,,,on a stock C5, your only going to see 5-10 HP and maybe 12 HP on a good day. Don't swallow the hook on high HP cat back exhaust gains! Change the system for looks and sound more than adding HP.

ONE OF THE BEST ALL AROUND C5 EXHAUST SYSTEMS that you can up-grade to is the stock C5 ZO6 Titanium system. Is a direct bolt on fit, looks GREAT, sounds MUCH better, has ZERO DRONE, as that 10 HP I was telling you about, weights 12 pounds less for each muffler (total 25 pounds less) and wont rust out!!!!!!

Here are pics of the muffler:

You can get them on the C5 parts for sale section for $300-450 used.

Post where you live and maybe someone will chime in who lives close and has an aftermarket system you can listen to.

Good luck on your selection and your Mods.

I live in oklahoma city, but I dont really want to spend upwards of $900 for corsa exhaust when I can have flowmasters put in for $250 (i know they drone)

I agree that the best thing you can do, before spending the big bucks, is to lsten to some other C5 vettes, equipted like yours. Go to some corvette clubmeeting or shows and ask other owners about their system. Belive me, they will talk your ear off, and let you listen. Its very subjective as to appearance and sound: and expecting about 10 more hp isn't out of the ball park. But the aftermarket exhausts definitely beat the oem, if you get one without serious dreaded droan.

I put 1/2 spacers and used longer bolts to put a gap between the H pipe and the muffler pipe just to see how loud the thing gets through the cats. Its loud and you will surely get up cllose and personal with resonance!!!!!!!!!

Use it only asa test cause it dumps out right at the fuel cells!!

My 99 came with Flowmasters welded in. They sounded OK, bad drone though and I hated the tips. Installed Corsa Indys and they sound much better and ZERO drone. Plus I did them in my driveway after cutting the F40s off.... Sound is subjective though. I would recommend getting a direct fit bolt on system though.
