Knocking
Any ideas on anything I can do, or is it a trip to the dealer? :cry
"Use premium leaded gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher for best performance. You may use middle grade or regular unleaded gasolines, but your vehicle's acceleration may be slightly reduced."
".....but don't worry if you hear a little pinging noise when you are accelerating or driving up a hill. That's normal and you don't have to buy a higher octane fuel to get rid of pinging. It's the heavy constant knock that means you have a problem."
"Some gasolines that are not reformulated for low emmisions may contain an octane-enhancing additive called methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT): General Motors does not recommend the use of such gasolines. If fuels containing MMT are used, spark plug life may be reduced and your emission control system performance may be affected. The malfunction indicator lamp on your instrument panel may turn on. If this occurs, return to your authorized Chevrolet dealer for service."
Here's what I think:
1) Some pinging is common and shouldn't be cause for panic.
2) For 99.9% of the time, I'm not at a serious disadvantage if running against your average 911, since THAT driver is probably not pouring octane booster in his/her car at every tankful. I played the octane-additive game, back when my 68's 327-350 required 95 octane (or better) to satisfy its 11:1 compression ratio and when I had a ZZ3 installed, I swore I'd never add octane booster to every tankfull again, especially if I wanted to drive the car every day.
3) MDT may cause problems that no one is aware of yet.
Food for thought!
