service column lock

service column lock
Last night my 99 vert started showing the service column lock message,it is a 6 speed,does this mean that I cannot drive this car,fearing that I may be stranded somewhere,I am able to steer the car when I crank the engine,if I put the key in the ignition and turn to on position I cannot turn the steering,only when I start the engine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Limit your driving if you can until you get it in. The warning is normally a predecesor to the darn thing actually locking up on you......
