Well I've been following the directions on this web site: http://www.ddisoftware.com/c5-procs/ Only thing is this is for a 1999, mines and 02. Everything went well until i went to pull the steering wheel out. It seems the telescoping wheel hardware(i think) is making it impossible to remove by just an 1/8.
Sorry these pics aren't so great. The circled tab in the last picture is what seems to be causing the snag. I tried to unbolt the damn thing but it's welded to the column.
After taking off all the nuts. The column drops and the tab hits the support bar below it before the upper bolts can clear.
According to the service manual you are suppose to
1.) Remove the the upper steering column bracket nuts from the upper reinforcement assembly.
2.) Slide the steering column off of the intermediate shaft.
3.) Remove the steering wheel from the vehicle.
Rotate the steering column clockwise as the bottom of the steering column reaches the reinforcement assembly. This will allow the telescoping steering column motor and the steering wheel position sensor room to clear the instrument panel brace.
My sensor failed a few years ago on my '99. Rather than worry about setting off the airbag, I elected to pay the dealer to replace it for me. Labor was $165 at that time for the whole job. No mistakes and no problems.
Thanks everyone, with all the info i found nothing wrong with my procedure. So I gave it a little man power and it popped right out... It seems it was a tight fit due to the tab... WOA be careful not to pop-off the rubber grommet that's fitted to the firewall. It was difficult for me to put back.(there is probably a trick) When I went to put the steering wheel back in, I had my brother keep back-pressure on the rubber grommet
