Changing plugs on my C5 for first time and find it too congested to get several of the plug wires off the plugs. I'm sure many will laugh at my incompetence, but is there any trick to get the ones surrounded by other things off when I can't get my hand around the metal sleeve to give it a good pull? Or am I missing something obvious?
Nope, they are a pain. First time I did mine, the most time I spent was getting off the original wires. I thought they were welded on
You can disconnect some of the air hoses on the driver's side to help with access, especially on #7 (back one). I just picked up a bunch of AIR gaskets to have because removing the check valve just makes it easier, and for a buck its worth it to get it out of there when you are working.
Don't feel bad I posted with the exact same problem. I did use a pair of pliers to grab the edge of the metal protector and gave a yank and got that hard to get to boot under the brake booster. If you can grab them and turn while pulling it helps allot. Remember to put dielectric grease on the boots when putting them back on so they are easier next time and use copper anti-seize on the plug threads also.

Taking a few minutes to completely remove the driver's side coil pack (5 bolts and 1 electrical connector) as an assembly, makes a huge difference with number 5 and 7.
HTH
On my car the coil packs were not the issue with the rear most drivers side plug. It was the hoses from the air tube and air box but mine is an 04 which is a little different. The air tube was easy to remove but the other was a "T" fitting and hard to get out of the way.
