Anyone know the paint process for 03 millenium yellow?
I bought an RK5 hood and need to get it painted, but I'm not sure the shop knows the right process. Since I own about the only vette in town, I'm a little worried....I'm assuming it might be a little different than painting say....a pinto....thanks...tom3257

Be worried. Check around on this forum and I'm certain there is a shop Knoxville or Chattanooga that can paint your hood properly. At the very least you need to see some jobs this dude has done on some high end cars.

Painting the milenieum is a little different than toher paints!! they acquired this brightnesss of yellow not all in paint but with a tinted top coat. Take the time and find the right place!! See what brand paint they are using, good products get you to a good finish!! Good luck!!
Yes, GM had trouble originally with Millenium Yellow and delayed its release until they figured out how to make it "bright" enough. The final answer (as SpeedyD points out) lay in actually tinting the "clearcoat" to enhance the color. Several other colors since then have also used this "trick". The easy way to tell if your color is a tinted clearcoat is when you see that the color was an "extra cost" option.
The simple answer... prime it, seal it (optional), base coat it, tint coat it, clearcoat it.
The main difference with MY is that it is a 2 stage paint consisting of a base coat and a tint coat.
Correct.
The painter needs to put only a half dozen or so drops of yellow per a pint of clear to tint it enough, then the clear. I had 2 coats of clear put on my bumper when repainted last month.

I read or someone told me that the tint they put in the first two clear coats has some sort of UV enhancer in it that makes the color more fluorescent in daylight than the paint by itself, like the Pennzoil yellow that was/is used on Indy open wheel cars, to make the paint really pop. The two additional clear coats seal the enhancer.
Anyone else know if this is the facts or did I dream this?
