Sprayed the throttle body on the vette with carb/fuel injection cleaner and cleaned up the debris with paper towels. Idle seems alot smoother. So, then I did the other car with 62K on it, and it drives like it was new. What a difference. It's amazing how much dirt/varnish/etc. gets around the throttle plate. Then, I did the pickup truck, same thing.
If you haven't done this in over 20k miles, I would recommend it.
They make Intake Cleaners now, they do a better job than Carburator/FI Cleaners. You should remove the throttle body to clean it and replace the gasket.

Good point. Next time I will use the new stuff. It was the old "use what you have on hand at the time" routine. Works well, I might add.
Always use the new T-B cleaners .The damage that can occur is to the Intake lining. As I understand, the old carb cleaners can remove pieces of this "lining " and actually injest them.
Just for clarification, the carb cleaner that I used is for cleaning the throttle plate with the throttle body installed. Per the manufacturer's (NAPA) instructions. The instructions were to spray on and then run at fast idle for 30 seconds. As always, if in doubt, please read the instructions first.
Clean the MAF sensor wires too. Remove the airbridge and pull the air filter housing off the 2 posts at the front behind the radiator. Then use brake cleaner and spray directly on the fine wires. DO NOT TOUCH THEM or swab them just spreay them several times from both sides and let the MAF sensor dry thoroughly b4 replacing it. I had slight hesitation on light to moderate throttle acceleration. Cleaned the TB AND the MAF and it seems ok now. BIGHANK
Instructions for cleaning the throttle body normally says not to soak the throttle plates or you can wash lubricant off the shaft.
I usually just spray cleaner on a towel, and wipe the backs of the throttle plates and bore. I have also read warnings about using solvents with methyl ethyl keytone MEK, because it is too harsh a solvent for this job, and not required just to remove carbon buildup.
On MAF sensor, as suggested, remove and spray with the correct solvent.

Are you talking about a lining on the throttle body when you say intake lining?
I read a caution on one of the new cleaners that said it was safe for teflon lined throttle bodies, but I have never seen one with a liner on the bores or throttle plates.
Both! as I understand it,you can also damage the inside of the intake as well.I only use TB cleaner.....Why risk it? I usually soak the TB with it WOT.Then start in flood mode(WOT) and clear the engine out so it idles,I then spray cleaner into the TB while keeping it running(this takes some finess).Any way you prefer is good....This makes a huge difference on any F.I. vehicle.
