I have a 98 that I just recently did a manifold and tb swap on and I noticed that my PCV system tubes were shot and had holes in them any way. What I did for now is cap all of the 4 areas and took off the oil cap to let the pressure vent.
My questions are as follows. Would you suggest putting the system back to stock how it was and throwing oil back into the intake? Does this help in any way? Is it needed to lubricate the engine and does there need to be vacuum given to the valve covers?
If not would you suggest a catch can or drilling into the filler neck and putting on a breather? I do not have FI setup just NA with 360rwhp max now.
You should get some kind of PCV setup on it with a catch can IMO.
When you say "my PCV system tubes were shot and had holes in them", are you talking about the metal tubes?
The plastic ones that run from the rear driver side of the engine to the passenger side and connect to the vacuum source on the intake manifold. They are rubber hose and have hard rubber inside in some areas...there's also a valve...
The pcv line or assembly that runs all the way from the left valve cover, around the back of the engine to the right valve cover and ends with the pcv valve to the intake. They cost $91 with tax here in Calif. and it includes the pcv valve. Rather than drilling holes and risking more problems, just order the part and replace it. Takes all of about 10 minutes to replace and then you have no problems.
The PCV system is designed to introduce clean air on one side of the motor and basically draw it through the motor internals and out the other side into the intake to be burnt. Condensation and blowby are then pulled out in this process. With a breather, you are not really effectly purging the crankcase.

It's not so much the money I'm worried about. I can get this new from GM for 35 shipped...
I am trying to find the best sollution for the system while I'm in there.
I could also run my own lines with a T and use the stock valve that I already have if I was trying to be cheap that would run me 10 dollars and it would be the same exact as the stock setup.
I've run breathers on almost everything except the vette.
And the only reason is because it is for the wife and will remain bone stock.
The PCV system is there for the government, EPA and DEQ as far as I'm concerned.
Oils are better now a days that deal with sludge.
Breathers allow the gasses and moisture boil off and vent to the atmosphere. If they were so important they would also be on big rigs and race cars of which are on neither of mine. And why design it to pull in more fresh air that contains alot of moisture? because it purges it to burn off which is what the EPA wants.
For years all cars had factory breathers and still would if the goverment hadn't gotten involved.
Probablly 99% of the people here will disagree, but I've been running them on every performance car for years.
