My 2000 Vette (convt) needs tires. It now has the original EMT's. I don't won't to pay for another set of EMT's as I don't drive the car but a few thousand miles a year. I do have the tire montoring sensors and wondered what problems are caused when you install regular tires with the sensors. Can I remove the sensors? What about a "check gages" light? Can I run a sealant in the tire with the sensors or would that damage them? And lastly, what tires do you guys recommend?
Thanks,
Gary
This is an easy one - switch to the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Zero Pressure (fancy word for run flat) tires - you will never look back.
I switched from the Goodyear EMTs about 5 months ago and what an unbelievable difference in noise (less), harshness (less), cornering (more grip), traction (more). The car now tracks like it is on rails.
Got mine from Discount Tire for $1,050 free shipping. Recommended local installer charged $135 to mount & balance and then went to the dealer for a 4 wheel alignment $100.
You can get form Tirerack the Continental pump w/goo. It is cheap relative to the premium that you pay for run-flats. If you get a flat use that. Get away from the run flats altogether. Michelins PS2's are a great tire but so are a lot of others that are a lot less expensive. The non-run flat tires will give you much better handling and a quieter ride. There are a lot of good threads that will help you choose. Good luck.
Point & Shoot, I looked at the "Tire Rack" page and the reviews confirm your opinion. I will consider this tire for sure but I wonder if you have a picture of this tire on a Vette. The edge of the tread looks more like something you would find on a 60's or 70's muscle car. Can you comment on this for me?
Thanks,
Gary
While I agree with the others that a non run flat tire is cheaper and will give an even better ride than the Michelin Pilots, my wife drives the car everyday and the peace of mind knowing that she'll be safe to get home if she gets a flat is priceless to me.
As far as the edge of the tread goes, it is a bit more rounded than the Goodyear EMTs and it projects a bit further from the rim. I think they look great.
I don't have a shot but I've seen pics on the forum and will paste in a thread once I find it.
I think Michelin are severely overpriced, as bad, if not, worse than Good Year. Check out tirerack.com. Set a budget, establish what you want from your tires, and do your own research.
i put goodyear gsd3's on my 99 after research on this forum and they are great. quiet, comfortable and great in the rain. i wanted an all around good tire with good rain performance just in case i got caught out and i am happy! don't plan on much, if any, track time and they look good too.
ntb matched the tire rack price.

I put a set of the GS D3's on my C4 and couldn't agree more.
A while back I was on a cruise with our Corvette Club and we got caught in a rain shower on a section of 4-lane. I was the last car in the line and of course was getting more than my share of water from the cars in front of me. The car directly in front of me had just installed a set of GS D3's on his Corvette. I slid out to get away from some of the blow off and was shocked to see the amount of water coming off the car with the GS D3's. Looking at the line of Corvettes it was obvious he was throwing off substantially more water than any of the other Corvettes.
I went with the Kumho Ecsta SPT from Tire Rack. I have had Kumho Tires before on my '86 Corvette. I am very pleased with these tires, they handle great are quiet and ride much better than the EMT GYs. I have the sensors and I carry a small compressor and plug kit. For long trips I bought a GTO spare tire and a Mercedes aluminum jack from a Forum member. By the way these tires have a summer compound which works for me. If you are cocerned the AST are M&S compound.
I think it was a great choice and much less expensive than the runflats. Jack and spare cost about $125 total.Tires were $503 delivered.

bfg kdw's. incredible performance, quiet, and believe it or not, with a real careful launch, deliver decent launches (1.9) at the track, with gears and converter. i was caught in rain a couple of times and are waaayyyy better than run-flats.

Not only are the Goodyear GSD3s the best all-around tires you can get in stock sizes, but they are also 24 lbs lighter than runflats. In a Car & Driver comparison test, these tires were within .01 gs of the top dry-surface traction tire, and trounced all others in wet traction. In fact, they generated greater cornering forces on a wet track than many other tires can generate on dry surfaces - that's incredible!

I am looking at getting Goodyear GS-D3's too. Right now, however, it seems TireRack.com is backordered for the rears in stock sizes...
I settled on the Michelin Pilot PS2. I wanted a tire that was quiet and this one is. The ride is much smoother and absorbs bumps as opposed to bouncing off them. The side wall looks great. The tread has a performance look to it. I found a Motor Trend article on this tire and it was rated extremely high. Obviously I don't know about milage but that isn't a concern as I only put a couple thousand miles a year on the car. I got them from the Tire Rack thru a friend that has a commercial account for $962 deliverewd to my door. The price was good for me. I have learned there are a lot of good options out there for tires, some that have already been mentioned in this thread. Thanks for all the opinions.
