I installed four new tire pressure sensors on my car last week (Tom at Fichtner Chevrolet fixed me up), as one of the seven year old ones was beginning to act up, and I was getting two new tires anyway. No problem training the new ones (used directions I found on the forum), and they were all fine until today. I had been on the road about 45 minutes, stopped to drop off a textbook for my daughter at college, and then about ten minutes later, I got a Service Tire Pressure Sensors message (or something like that). My LF sensor reading began showing Lxxx. It stayed this way until I got to work. This afternoon, it was fine.
My question is: Is this normal, or at least expected, behaviour for good tire pressure sensors? If it happens now and then, and is harmless, I'll leave it alone. However, if something is bad, then I will call Tom and ask him about another one.
I've done several sensor installs and never had that happen. Do the re-learn again. If the problem continues it's either a bad sensor or it was not installed correctly and has somehow rotated so that it's touching the rim or was over torqued. Good luck.
It is NOT normal. De-pressureize and re-pressureize the tire and check sensor for normalm op. Relearn one more time. If it still acts up, get a new one!
I watched the guys install the sensors last week, and everything seemed right as far as the install went. I'll go ahead with the de-pressurize and re-pressurize today and then train the sensors again. Will keep you posted.
After I had new tires installed, my one sensor wouldn't work for about 7 miles, until I ran over a railroad track, then it worked. Worked well ever since that. I figured maybe the motion sensor (whatever they use) got stuck.
Before I put new sensors on, one time my RF display went about three miles with no readout, and then I hit a bump on a new bridge and the seven year old RF sensor started working again. It had also acted up several times before that, so I knew their time was about up.
I de-pressurized, and the re-pressurized the LF tire, and then re-trained the sensors again per your advice from two weeks ago. Have driven it almost every day since then with no more problems.
Note, beware when buying new sensors! There is a MFG date on the sensor and mine were made in 1996. Well, I bought one new and it had a MFG date of 1997 and it too craped out with a year of service. I cut it open and found out that the battery in the sensor was DEAD!
