Default Headlamp Shroud Access Caps

Does anyone have a simple fix-aside from glue-to keep the access caps from blowing off on the pop-up headlamp shrouds? I had to replace the entire shroud and cap on the left and now the right is missing. If anyone has a spare cap send me a email on cost.

I'm not sure what the OD is on the oem headlight plugs, but any ACE or TRUE VALUE hardware stores have a good selection of "hole plugs" in hard plastic, vinyl or metal with tangs...might be an option. You can find them in the same area as the regular fasteners (bolts/nut/screws etc).

Burgie, measure the opening if its the 2 1/8 inch plug, might be able to help you out.

Best bet is to silicone seal those plugs on from the inside. I haven't lost any since late 98.

Here's the best solution: Pick up a new pair of the "later model headlight bezels" with the locking plugs from Fred Beans Chevrolet (supporting vendor - ask for Dave). Less than $30 shipped - problem solved. The original plugs were made too small for the openings on the older bezels, thus the popping out problem. GM finally realized there was a problem and corrected it with the "locking plugs." SNAFU.

Default caplugs

Go to CAPLUGS in upstate NY on the Internet. They will send u a FREE SAMPLE of the plug you need if you have the OLD STYLE plug, just a round CAPLUG without the locking tab. Can't remember the size but I think its 2 1/4" but CHECK IT OUT before ordering a sample. Then USE SOME BLACK RTV to KEEP IT IN THERE. When adjusting the headlights take out the 3 screws and remove the whole plastic shroud capplug and all. I have ONE old style and one NEW style and they both have the "removable" PLUG RTVed in place. Had that problem on my '99- dealer ended up getting the revised bezel and plug that locks in place and never had another one blow off.

I ran a small bead of RTV silicone around it and put it back on. Better than glue, will still be able to get it off if needed. With glue maybe not.

That probably larger OD than anything you'll find in the hardware store "hole plug" section. RED GREEN would suggest duct tape.
