ok, i'll tell you upfront, i'm confused. if i read it right on this forum the question of what type of trans oil to use in a six speed c-5 a good synthetic like Royal Purple ATF, Amsoil, or Mobil 1 ATF as the answer. I have my '99 six speed at a local Chev dealer and took them four qts of Royal Purple ATF and asked them to exchange the fluid in the tranny. I got a call from the shop foreman explaining that I had taken them ATF and my car was a six speed. I told him what i had read and he informed me the dealership could not, no, would not do the exchange since his tech thought i was crazy. So, i'm asking my fellow forum members, am i not reading right or is the dealership paranoid for no reason? set me straight so i can either thank the dealer or blast him. Please, I'm miffed and concerned. HELP please.
Tell the dealer to RTFM. ATF is correct, per the shop manuals. I know it sounds weird. The Corvette isn't the first vehicle to use ATF in a manual transmission.
dexron 3 atf or higher you said it correctly! i would take my car and go to another dealer because they obviously are idiots! it even has a sticker on the bottom of the trans specifically stating "atf dexron 3"
Yes the C5 uses DEXRON.. if I remmber I think I even saw a decal on the side of the trans the says DEXRON... which DEXRON is standard GM ATF... I've used AMSOIL SYN ATF in many of my customers cars.. I've had great results and that is why I sell it..
I am guessing this dealer doesn't work on vettes all that often....

Is your car drivable? If so, go get it the instant the dealer opens. Call the service dude and tell them they are not to touch it and that you're coming to get it. The MN6 uses Dexron and the the Royal Purple ATF is one of the fluids that members on this forum have found to give good service. Curiously, the O'Reilly's private label Dexron has gotten good reviews as well.
And don't EVER take your car to this dealer again because they obviously know nothing about the C5.
I am going to show this thread to the dealership foreman and the tech and then i will show the owner. Thank you for your help and suggestions. I was pulling what little hair i have left trying to figure if I had a little dementia....
Take your owner's manual with you. It clearly specifies that Dexron III is used in the manual transmission as well as the automatic tranny.
You should go right to the dealership Service Manager and ask him 1)why you got the phone call and 2) why the technician did not know what the proper fluid was for the Corvette manual transmission. If the tech didn't bother to look at hte tranny or even look up the proper fluid using the FSM or the computer system, he should not be working on the car.
Some dealerships have lube shop people that are not factory trained technicians; these people are no better than the local Jiffy Lube type of places and they probably can do no more than drail oil from an oil pan. If this is the case, definitely find another place that knows what they are doing in order to have your car properly serviced.
I would not even discuss it with the service writer that you saw when you took the car in. As long as the fluid you provided met the GM spec for a Dexron III fluid, they should have had no problems with installing it in the car.
The Service Manager is the person responsible for everyone in the Service Department. It's his responsibility to insure that his staff knows what they are doing and that any customer concern (like yours)is handled to your satisfaction. If he doesn't know the answer to the proper lubricant or at least can't get a good answer for you, he is not doing his job

I will be visiting the service manager in on Monday to take a copy of this thread and to see why he is hiring so poorly. Clearly all of you are right on with what I should do and I will promise to report back to you what the SM said. Can't wait to hear the response!
Dont try to blast the manager and cause a scene!! It will make you out as the bad guy. Just confront him/her with the facts and ask him why the technician did not know what the correct fluid was.
They may try to tell you that it is not a GM DEXTRON. As long as it meets all GM specs, your on the correct side of the line!

Heck, my 99 1 ton Ford Superduty diesel uses ATF in its 6 speed.

Here is a suggestion on how to approach the service mgr. When I am particularly upset (almost never) with service or a particular employee, I go to his/her boss and say something like: "You have an employee who is not doing you any good or me any good." Then I explain the situation. Most mgrs are very appreciate that I am trying to help them rather than trying to beat them up.
Good luck,
Ed
Hell make a scene, it never ceases to amaze me on these Dealer's.
We should do like an MSNBC internet chat/predator bust and take hidden video cameras, post them on utube.
