Default Timing chain

Does anyone know how much slack should be in the 99' LS1 timing chain. I have 90,000 miles and Im doing a cam swap. It seems like there is just over 1/4" of back-and-forth play, maybe even a little more.
Thanks
Josh

Do yourself a favor and buy an LS2 timing chain. Cost is under $30 and it is thicker than your original OEM LS1 chain yet fits over the existing sprockets.

LSX chains tend to seem loose... there's a few reasons floating around the internet as to why.

However... do what Hammer said and get an LS2 chain, it's a good bit beefier than the LS6/LS1 chain and fits w/o any modification. I got my from SDPC (www.sdpc2000.com) for around $30.00.

I just finished up my cam install yesterday, here's a pic of the chain next to my stocker.

Don't do cam install until you have the money to change T/C and new oil pump. You may think about a U/D pulley at the same time since the old one will be off. Frank

The timing chain (LS2) and the oil pump (LS4, it's higher volume) were the cheapest parts of my cam install at $30ish and $60ish respectively... the ATI super damer was not

Like the guys above said, since you're in there spend the few bucks and get the LS2 chain and "LS4" pump! Cheap insurance for your engine!! We've got both in stock, let me know if I can help you out!

Thanks guys.
Ill end up getting the LS2 chain, and possibly the oil pump. Will i need the cam sprocket, or is it exclusively the chain that I need? I went into this project expecting to spend $9k, and its already at $10.5k. I literally dont have any money to spend if its not absolutely necessary. I might not be able to pay the APS kit off by this friday when they supposedly ship.

Thanks
Josh
