We just bought our 2002 coupe, automatic, yesterday and seem to be having an issue. After you have been driving and then come to a stop, for a stop light etc., it does not downshift to first gear, it will only go down to second. So when you start going again it comes off the line in second gear. Has there been an issue with this before? An easy fix?
How do you know it starts in second?
Where is the gear selector?
If you put the selector in second the transmission starts in second and stays in second. This was designed for better traction in ice/snow. It is a pain in the butt autocrossing.
The selector is in Overdrive. I know that it won't downshift if you put it in second. I know it is in second because of the general lack of power, and then when I manually put the selector in first it downshifts to first. It isn't a constant thing either, sometimes it does it other times it works perfectly.
My initial thought was that it was somehow getting the second gear start mode jammed in there somehow.
The tech guys will know for sure, but I am pretty certain that the tranny defaults to 2nd when there is an electronic problem. Are you getting any codes? It could be as simple as a disconnected solenoid. If you look under the car near the rear right wheel, you will see a data cable connector there. That is one that I know of that, if diconnected, would cause what you described...
