I just bought a 99 vette and the shifter throw is like driving an old school bus. Does anyone know if you can cut down the stock shifter to reduce the amount of throw? If it can be done does anyone know how to do it?
This is about the 3rd time this question has been asked in the last week.
There are a lot of variations on how to shorten the stock shifter. If you do a search, you will find several.
I extended the threads to the large diameter, cut off about an inch, and changed *****. Then I pulled it out again, and put in a Hurst, which is about the same height, and the pivot point is higher so the throw is even shorter.
I re-installed a breathless shifter that i purchased a few months back... If you want crisp short throws, you need to get a nice aftermarket shifter for you ride.
If you want it shorter than that, you can cut the threaded end shorter, but it will require more effort to shift. You need to eliminate the cone shaped rubber insert to eliminate that sloppy feeling. Do a search in the archives for the "Chuckster Mod" for other ways to mod the shifter.
Mine looks like the one Texhawko posted. If you look at the stock shifter that he posted, I cut the smooth section out that is below the threads. It is about an inch or a little better. I cut that one inch section out and just welded it back together.
