I am running a VHP 056, 216/224 0.551/0.551 115 LSA and my mileage is unchanged, if not better than stock now that I have on the heads and bumped my compression to 11:1.
Your biggest mileage loss will be due to your trigger happy right foot
If you did than you made a bad choice. There are a lot of other cars out there that get better milage...
Just joking, it is go to know how mods effect gas milage.
Mine didn't change a lot on the highway. I just did Long Island to AC and back and it averaged 22mph in an A4 w/3.42s. I didn't buy my Vette for the gas mileage, but the fact that it is decent is a big plus.

3.42 in an A4 really hurts gas milage. I went from 26-28 to 22-24 on mpg.
My tuned custom comp cam (228/232) is still getting me 30+ on the highway and 20+ in town (averaging 20-22 with 50/50 combined driving and warm ups on cold mornings). The trick is staying out of the pedal!
I'd say that most mild to mid cams (anything less than a G5X3 or similar) should get you the same or better econonmy than stock assuming they're properly tuned. When you go real radical and super high lift, you end up getting a very inefficient idle/part throttle which hurts fuel economy significantly.

Way to "rain on my parade" install of my G5X3 and AFR 205 heads. What to do? Power or gasmileage, power or gasmileage, power or . . . POWER!
You really don't lose enough to be concerned about. Since I have installed my MS4 cam my mpg has dropped quite a bit but it is because I can't keep my foot out of it!

I bet that was a long trip at 22 MPH! Haha... must have been some major traffic, though in NY I'd believe it! J/K - I knew you meant mpg.
