Default Update on the fuel gauge/sending unit problem

Here is an update on my fuel gauge/sending unit problem that I posted a few days ago......
After letting the car "rest" for a day I jumped in ready to head for the gas station to do a tank top off. I turned the ignition key and watched the needles sweep through their "startup check procedure" and waited.....
The fuel gauge was still at empty :mad But 8 seconds later..."ding"...it pops up to a little over 1/4 tank (the correct reading)*WTF*...I took the car out for a spin and ran it hard for about 25 minutes and the gauge continued to read correctly.....I decided not to top off the gas so I can how it reads until empty. Weird

Jtex,

I didn't catch your original post but any weird thing relayted o the gas gauge I would take to the dealer - there is and has been a TSB out on the fuel sending unit for quite some time. Even if your vehicle is out of warranty, they most likely will cover it. I wouldn't drive yourself nuts over this - just tke it to the dealer and let them take care of it. Good luck.

I've had the fuel gauge problem twice and in mine the gauge would sometimes work correctly, sometimes read empty, and sometimes read a quarter tank more or less than correct. It would usually read one of the above for a day or two and then switch to one of the other conditions. Even if it is correct for now don't count on it.

I would sure like to know how many people have had this happen to them, it seems like about 50%. Should we run a poll ?

Happened to me twice also. Once I run ran out with a 1/8 of a tank indicated and the last time I got " low fuel and check gages with three gallons left. I just dont let get below 1/2 tank. She has not been to mister badwrench yet and I am trying to keep it that way. My $0.02 worth.

I had it happen to mine a few weeks ago. It was driving along fine, then wham....the gauge goes to empty and the range on the dic has no number displayed. The dealer has it right now and is working on it...I'm having the rotors fixed as well and it took over a day.:(

There is a documented fix, but it involves pulling the gas tank!!! I'm definitely gonna be watching the garage floor for leaks for awhile....

Happened to me twice also. The gauge would work fine until it reached 3/8, then it would read empty. The latest dealer fix seems to have worked,

this is the same way it happens with me. then i refuel and it goes back to normal. i don't really want to take her to the dealer unless i know for sure that it will be corrected. since some have reported that the problem comes back again after the dealer fix.

Happened to me once. Shortly after I went to WOT the very first time in this car (approximately 900 miles). Thought I had about a half tank, but the gauge and DIC abruptly said no more fuel! First thought was that these injectors sure use a lot of fuel at WOT. :D

Second thought was maybe I was mistaken about the fuel level. Exited immediately and bought fuel. Only held a half tank. This 2002 Z06 now has 2300 miles and has not done that since the 900 mile event.

I am now keeping one of the trip odometers reset at each fill, so if it reccurs I can refer to the miles driven since the last fillup and know when it really needs fuel and also have a rough but independent assessment of fuel gauge accuracy.

I'm going to monitor this for awhile.

i think a poll would be a good idea.. iv had this happen to me 5-10 times!
always around 1/4 tank.. then drop to 0.. the first time i was on the parkway and it #^%&* scared the @&%# outa me!
it hasnt done it in a few months now.. prolly cause i been keepin her always above 1/4 tank.. but i wana findout the replacement parts i read about in some posts, so i can tell the dealer to order the parts
