Default Chevy but not Vette question, service engine

I have a 2001 Tahoe. Recently the service engine light came on. Is there a trick way of reading the codes without buying a reader? On my 1984 and 85 Corvettes I was able to use a jump wire to connect the first and last terminals on the reader port to get the light to flash the code. If this can be done on the Tahoe how would I do it and where would I find a listing of the codes?

The easiest and free way to figure out why the Check engine light came on, is to go to a Autpo Zone etc. They have the scanner and will pull the code for you for and give you a print out of the code that was, and what it means for free. You can even purchase a OBD II scanner from them for about $125.00

Just use their free service. I would avoid purchasing their scanner since all it can do is read engine/powertrain codes. Most of the other systems on the car need a scanner also if you want to figure out what is going on with them and an OBD II reader is useless with them. Last year I had a problem with the level ride on my 03 Tahoe and found I needed a scanner to diagnose the problem.

The scanner also allows you to erase and clear the codes to turn off the light.
