I have a 98 A4 and a 99 MN6 and just the other day my 98 a4 shut down on me and read service column lock, I've owned the car since May of last year never had that come up? I've had pull key wait 10 seconds but that's rare.....Then tonight on my 99 6spd I was working on some cosmetics on the car and had the door open so the battery dies, so i gave it a jump, took it down the road for a quick spin, jumped on it a little got to stop sign, the car died? which is one problem I cant figure out why? the idle was very low and it just stalled out. So when I started it back up it read service column lock? . I just bought the 99 last month and have not driven it really at all, tonight was the first time i took it around the block in a little over a month?(not registered yet gotta sell my 98 first) Also I kno that when i first got the 99 the wheel would lock when key was not on.....After service column lock popped up tonight, wheel will no longer lock? an anyone please tell me what that means?
And also What's with the car just dieing out and idleing so low? could it be from sitting??? Please Help! thanx!
I bought my '99 MN6 FRC used. The column lock system worked fine for a while. One time I got the 'Service Column Lock' alert and the wheel was unlocked with the key out. I could turn it, start the car up, turn it off , and the thing wouldn't lock. I disconnected the battery, waited about 5 minutes and hooked up the battery. The lock engaged as I was hooking up the battery and I thought everything was OK. Got the alert twice more and got fed up. Installed a Column Lock Bypass from Thunder Racing. That was in May, no issues ever since. Have your battery LOAD tested. Sounds like you may have a flaky or marginal battery. These cars are electronics intensive systems and are sensitive to battery issues.
Can't he just attempt to turn the wheel with the car off to see if it locks or not?
Yeah that should be a clue...could be the older GM "fix" though which really didn't work for any length of time. CLB is the way to go for me and a kazillion others on the forum
