Hello - Quesion on my '99 Manual 6-spd. 30K miles.
If I attempt to shift fast into second gear I get a slight crunch or snag on he way into gear (not a grind). If I pause for a half second to let the revs come down slightly it goes right in. My BMW did this as did my old Mustang GT. Is this normal? Can it be fixed? Also, I want to change the fluid. Who knows, that may help this. But, I've read about paper blocking rings (?) which don't like synthetic. Yet, I've read that that Amsoil ATF is safe for paper. Then I've read that they stopped using paper in '97. There are as many opinions as there are posts on this subject so I don't want to start a whole debate on favoriate fluids. What I would like are answers to the following:
1. What the he11 is this second gear hangup and can it be fixed?
2. Is there a difinitive way to know if I have the paper blocking rings without a bunch of labor?

Sounds like a bad synchro. It can be replaced but it is tranny work. Check level fluid first though.
My 4th gear does the same thing only when I powershift at high RPMs
