I want to get a new cam and underdrive pulley put on my 2000 FRC, anyone know a reasonable/reliable place to get this done in central/north jersey. Got a quote from Cartek in Garwood they wanted 3200 including parts/labor, cam was like 500, pulley and belts like 300 so it looks like 2400 or so in labor seemed high to me. If anyone has a recomendation on where to go please let me know I am thinking that 800-1000 is a more appropriate charge for this service. Thanks,
Contact Steve (CTCorvette). He is in Avon, CT but from his posts he appears to be very consciecious in his work and is ex-Air Force so based on my dad's methods of working on motors, he is probably careful as all heck too.
I can't help you with a place to get it done but I paid $1K for a cam swap on my car and you can do the pulley while installing the cam so that shouldn't be anymore. They probably added in $500 or so for a tune though, even though that would still only be $1500?
If distance is a concern, then you could try TTP Performance in Clifton.
I however recommend ECS. Farther drive but well worth it. They are one of the best in the nation..whats an extra hour drive?
Oh and a cam swap will need a dyno tune, valvetrain upgrade such as valve springs, retainers, locks, etc. ...that is why you need to budget more than 1000
$3200 is way to high for that; sounds like someone is making a tremendous amount of money on that deal. I think my friend paid around $1300 for the cam and supporting hardware installed at MTI.

Jon,
You left out a few items. Here is a list of what we would be doing.
Parts,
Cartek Custom ground cam, computer verified before installation.
Manley dual valve springs.
Titanium retainers.
Spring seat locators.
Viton valve seals.
Spring shims.
HD cam bolts.
Cromoly push rods.
Double roller timing chain with torrington thrust bearing.
ASP under drive pulley.
AC and main serpentine belts.
Front cover gasket.
Front main seal.
6 quarts of oil and an oil filter.
2 gallons of Dexcool coolant.
Labor and services,
All labor to, install the valve springs at the correct height, install and degree the cam, measure the push rods for the correct preload, all other necessary labor.
Full custom dyno tuning.
The cost of going faster with just a cam than others have gone with heads and cam = priceless.

I've been west coast and midwest... So I don't know the tuner's on the east coast other then by reputation. But the only advice I would give is shell out a little extra to go to one of the premier tuners... Esp for the tune. You'd be amazed how they seam to get more power out of the exact same setup.
Shops use different manufacturers for different parts such as springs, retainers, etc. These parts vary in price and quality.
What you are looking for is results and quality. Yes price does factor in, but so does results. When we design a package for a customer we ask many questions to tailor the package for the driveabilty and performance you are looking for. We've spent hundreds of hours on the dyno and the track testing combinations for optimal performance, durability, and driveabilty.
While most shops install a cam in one day the same job takes us two and a half days because quality and optimum performance can't be rushed.
Jon/Dave, thanks for the additional information, I didnt realize all the additional pieces in your price. I have a bit of a conundrum to figure out, I need to replace the pulley as it is wobbly while there I was thinking might as well do the cam......I have to figure this one out

Anytime Jon, that is what we're here for. Changing the pulley or also installing the cam, either way we would be happy to help. The pulley will net 7 RWHP by it's self, and the cam an additional 35 to 40.
