they are not on the car yet, but there seems to be a lot of play between the x-pipe and the header. They just slide on. Once they are together, there is just way to much play and i can tell it will leak. Does anyone else have this problem? do you all just use the sleave clamp?

Hard to say since you never said what brand you're dealing with. The Kooks headers I've been using use a "ball-socket" type connection instead of the older design "flat" flange and don't use a gasket at all. Some other brands use this design as well. I've had zero header leaks ever since my install a couple years ago.
If your exhaust system / headers have the slip fit there will be clamps that go on the slip fits to tighten up the joint. I also have Kooks and the x-pipe section uses a slip fit - no leaks if you tighten the clamps.
Some Forum members have used a high temperature RTV to help seal the slip fit joint but I would not want to have to deal with the RTV should you need to pull the pipes apart - and you will when the starter fails.
