Hi folks ... this is my first post to your fine forum!
Last week I traded my 1998 Vert in for a new 2002 Coupe. I put 350 miles on it and decided after spending this much $$$ I would do a little preventative maintenence on the drivetrain. I stopped in to the dealer this morning and asked the service writer to have my oil changed, transmission fluid, gasket and filter done and to drain the rearend and refill it ... all per GM specs.
He told me I was nuts and wasting my money!
It took ten minutes to convince him I was serious and was demanding it be done! He still thought I was crazy!
Every new vehicle I have ever owned was serviced at 500 miles or less and then again at 2000 or so. A few dollars invested into the long term health of a $48,000.00 automobile doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
Agreed on the dealer point ... but it is brand new and I like the idea of having them do regular maintence on the car to protect my warranty. If and when that day comes!
Yes, you are one loco hombre. The manufacturer, who just happens to be the same entitiy that sets the warranty, says that it is NOT necessary to change the oil at 500 miles. All you **** retentive folks flame on.
Back when I was a little pup and Mobil 1 had just come out, they touted 25,000 mile oil changes. But, hey, if you got the money to waste, go for it.

I think that if it were 1970, changing all fluids that soon would make good sense, but I have to agree with the quoted post - today's manufacturing processes are superior to the "old" days. I know more than a few people who have driven their cars for more than 200,000 miles ( and that's with petroleum-based oils) and have simply followed the manufacturer's recommendations for service intervals.
Not one of them has had his fluids changed before the first recommended change. Hey, it certainly can't be THAT bad!
