I have the rear rotor off. A U shaped, spring if you will, fell out. What is the correct position to re-install? I see two hooks on the brake back plate, that it appears to clip onto. Just want to make sure its on right. anyone have a diagram?
you may go to your friendly auto parts house and they might have the diagrams of the brake assy. sounds like you may be missing some sort of retaining clip to hold it in place. i just had my rotors off a few weeks ago, but everything stayed in place.
No retaining clip, it hooks under the 2 tabs on the backing plate and makes a 3 point contact on the E-brake shoe to hold it down.
I just went through this myself last week, it's not fun to reinstall with the hub in the way.
But it can be done by fishing it through the 2 holes in the hub start by clipping under the top tab first, then make sure the center is against the shoe then snap under the lower tab.
Good luck and have a few brews standing by!
Its a FUN job as I did it too when adjusting the star wheels for the p brake. Make sure you do this also. My p brake didn't work for almost 5 years until I replaced the pads pulled the rotors and set the starwheels to JUST get some drag on the rotor sliding it on and off. I had JUST a little too much drag and thats how I popped the spring off. As the previous appender said hook one of the ends, and the center then use a "spring hook" thru the wheel hub hole which is there I believe for that purpose until you finally get both ends and the center hooked. It took me 3 1/2 hrs AFTER I ran arround and found a spring hook that would be able to manuver the return spring over the retaining points. A few beers might help but AFTER you have the damn thing hooked. The GM Manual says
REPLACE THE SPRING
but supposes you are clairvoiant in doing this. BIGHANK
This thing IS a PITA!! Mine popped off when I replaced all my rotors and pads a while back. It is what made a couple hour job a 4 hour job!! Now I have to go back in and adjust the E-brake....ugh.
That's exactly what I thought, but I needed the experts to bless it. Got it back in in about 5 minutes, however I left one contact point between the brake shoe and backing plate. So I'll have to go back in for round two, with a few brews! LOL. Big thank you to mph1972 for the tech assist.
