A lot of threads on this problem. I have had this happen on occasions (maybe 3 times since having the car).
Last time it was caused by the car setting up with less than half a tank. So what I did was let it get below half tank and poured in a can of Techron and let it set a few days, then poured another can in the tank went out and topped it off with gas and so far for a few months the problem hasn't returned.
By the way use Chevron gas only if possible.
Sulfur in the gas corrodes the wires on the sending unit. Depending on the amount and time of corosion, Techron may help. If corrosion has continued too long you may wind up having to replace the sending unit. A while back, the General issued a TSB in which they talk about about adjusting the computer to increase resistance to get around (hide) the problem. Kinda sounds a little wacky to me. I had the problem in Dec '05. Used a 20 oz bottle of Techron and followed up with a 12 oz bottle on the next tank of gas. Have used an additional 2 12oz over the last year and have not had it reoccur since then. I use Mobil Premium gas.
I had the same thing happen to my 98 Coupe the other day. I actually poured the bottle of techron into a full tank and the gage started working within 1 hour. Try that before spending any other money on it.
