I have been reading the board for several weeks & this will be my first post. I am hoping that someone can help me out with an odd whistle noise I am experiencing. I have a 2001 Coupe 6-speed that I picked up new (only 90 miles). Regardless of the gear, it makes an odd whistle sound when the throtte is lightly applied (I just barely step on the pedal). If I apply more throttle the noise ceases.
It is quiet enough that I don't hear it over the stereo, but it is a bit annoying. Any thoughts?
I used to have that whistling noise right after startup. It would disappear after the engine was warmed-up. Now it doesn't happen anymore (2100 miles on car). Some of the previous posts have stated that the dealer will replace the part that is causing this sound, if asked - at no charge. You might want to give it a while before doing so - it may just disappear as mine did.
This noise is coming from the intake manifold. There evidently is a depression in the manifold which the rushing air will whistle against at low speeds. this problem has been recognized by Chevrolet.
It's the intake manifold as Paul said. Have your dealer pull up the TSB (technical service bulletin). To fix the annoyance they will have to replace the manifold.
I may have mine fixed sometime before warranty expires, but for now it doesn't bother me that much.
Paul and MDT are correct. Some '01s whistle louder than others and then some only whistle at particular sustained RPMS (e.g. 2,200-2,400) and some don't whistle at all. I remember reading that when the plant workers mixed and matched throttle bodies to the '01 intake, some would whistle and others wouldn't...but the culprit is really the intake with the depression as discussed above. If it really bothers you, get your intake replaced. I sometimes will hear a "faint whistle" if I'm in 4th or 5th gear holding 2,200 RPMs steady on very cool weather days. But I usually don't drive around holding that RPM ( I usually leave it in 5th and cruise around 1,800 RPMs). You will have to decide if it's worth taking your baby into the dealer and letting them install the new intake. :yesnod:
P.S. if cranking up the a/c or just turning up the radio a bit louder elminates the noise from reaching your ear like you said, I would opt to live with it.
