Hi, I've got a 2001 coupe. The last two years I've been doing some autocrossing and some track days at Mid-Ohio. This year I'm finally ready to buy some real track tires (I've been using my streets). I bought a set of Z06 rims to put the tires on. My question is what kind of tires would you recommend? I was looking at the Hoosier's but they have the A6 for autocross and the R6 for road racing. I want to do both! And I really don't want to buy two sets. If you could only buy one type, which would be best? Will the A6s be ruined on road courses? Will the R6s never warm up on the autocross? What about the Kumho Ecsta V710s? What's everybody else running?
#1. You will get a better answer to this question over on the roadracing and autocross sections of the Forum... That is where all the track rats hang out and there are plenty of folks over there that have "been there and done that"
In a direct answer, it depends on how serious you are about either track days or autocross. Forget about running the A6's on a track day. You will destroy them in 20 laps or so. If you are more serious about autocross, get the V710's. They will last most of a season of autocross and if you aren't brutal with them will work as a track day tire. If you are more serious about track days get the R6's, but they won't be as good at an autocross as V710's.
There are some other tires that are good track day tires, and aren't as "consumable" as the A6's or V710's. Depending on your skill level and experience, that might be a lot less expensive (in the long run) than jumping straight to the stickiest tire available. I am thinking about MX's or V700's, which are really good tires and will last a lot longer in track day usage, and are still a lot better than a typical street tire.
The V710s would be a good selection. However, if you are driving the car to the autocross or track the Victoracer V700s are a little more streetable. By trailering I was able to get a couple years useage out of a set of Victoracer V700s doing 5 trac days and 20 autocrosses per year.
