Thanks for the info. I have the stock gears so I am thinking bearings might be the culprit.

I get some resonant whine through the aftermarket shifter. Not a big deal.

My car started just doing the same as the origional post. Whines on acceleration or at cruising, no whine when I let off the gas or when the clutch is depressed. Seems more prominant above 35mph. Also seems to vary with speed and not RPM. I best guess is syncro's in trans, or rear end bearings? Anyone else have this issue and get it fixed? I have a 3 day autox this weekend that's 120mi away.

Got the same thing on my '00. Noticed it after adding the Royal Purple to the trans. Thought this might be the problem.

I had my rear end rebuild about 14 months ago, used amsoil in the trans and rear end. Also used the amsoil limited slip additive.

Mines getting much much louder. I origionally thought pinion bearing, but after heading to the track, I'm thinking it might be the transmission. Anyone have any suggestions?

I posted on this thread months ago about my problem. I replaced the rear end. I got the rear end from a shop in Florida. The whine went away in all gears except when driving 65 mph in 6th gear ; I get a whine at that speed up to about 75.

The paperwork from the Florida shop says they will guarantee the rear end for the first 10,000 miles ; I have 3000 miles on it now. I told the shop that installed it what is going on and they test drove the car and substantiated the situation. I wanted to drive the car a while with the hope of the problem correcting itself; it has not gone away. It is on the verge of being annoying but it is not overly loud , but noticeable.

I don't know if this slight noise is 'somewhat' normal and if I get another rear end, it will be worse. It is not clear in my own mind to what to do. I am leaning toward doing nothing and stay with what I have as the noise is not severe and everything works very well.

I have the same problem everyone else has described. My concern is driving the car a great distance and having a catastrophic failure. This thread has been alive for a while now and so far nobody has had a transmission/differential fail.

Is this whining noise something I need to take care of right away? Or just something I should deal with?

Was the group conclusion the noise is coming from the rear differential?

What action have the other owners taken?

I have a 02 Z06 486rwhp and I drive it aggressively. My clutch is a twin disk rated at 800hp, and I have an Astro transmission built like a tank. So I would also point my finger at the rear diff. . . .

I had the local Chevy place put the car up on a lift and run it. The noise is coming from the back of the transmission and the differential. The transmission fluid was in a little burnt (had 35k miles on it), but the differential fluid was in very poor condition with metal flakes in it. I already have plans to purchase a new beefed up differential. They recommend we tear the transmission apart to inspect it.

Would you take any action with the tranny? It was rebuilt 35k miles ago for drag racing, and works perfectly.

My thoughts are 1. The differential is a completely separate entity from the tranny, and the chances of them going out at the same time are slim. 2. The tranny is most likely carrying noise from the broken differential. 3. It was due for a fluid change, leave it alone. . . .

Well, I drove the crap out of the car yesterday. The wine got really bad, and I started to feel a really light vibration in the shifter. So I ordered a RPM level 3 differential. Should have it installed by the end of the month. I will let you know how it turns out.

I had the same problem. Did a diff/tranny fluid replace (even though I know the tranny is in the back) and it eventually went away.

Would like to know if any of you ever found their problem? My car started doing this. I put an rpm built 3.73 in it and the noise is still there. Really looking for some solutions here.

Back in the day when I had an M22 4 speed the whining noise came from the straight teeth in 1st gear and that was really a loud normal whine....hopefully its a normal noise from the bearings...
Interested to hear the answer on this one...keep us posted

reviving an old thread .
i have an 02 Z. just picked it up few weeks back, Has a RPM, trans and diff. not sure what level they are, Took it out for a drive and have the whine, not under load especially, but not coasting either, just under slight power cruising, I changed the diff fluid, is like new. changed the trans fluid. black as molasses, i m thinking this shouldn t be, talked to RPM and they said it is not normal, Not sure what to think, can t drive it much for the next month prob till the snow and salt are gone.
i am 3rd owner, original owner did the motor and diff, 2nd owner installed trans. says he never heard a whine.

Any thoughts ?
